Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle tests for drug detection in Worthington, Indiana. Whether you require testing for drugs or alcohol, our centers across the nation are equipped. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be used. Hair testing options include drugs, alcohol/ETG, and more customized analyses.

Hair follicle drug tests have become a common method recently. Employers, legal institutions, and Substance Abuse specialists prefer this over urine testing. Such tests are crucial for entities with a strict no-drug policy, providing an extended detection period of up to 90 days. They are monitored during collection, nearly impossible to tamper with, though urine tests are still preferred for recent use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is viewed as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair acts as a record of alcohol and drug use over time by capturing biomarkers within the strands as hair grows. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer up to a three-month detection window for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) taken nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, ideal for both screening and confirmation tests. For EtG, additional substances, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, it is suggested to have 150mg of the sample. We suggest weighing the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be obtained. "Head hair" pertains solely to scalp hair. "Body hair" includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning starts with integrating a sample into a lab’s system. This step ensures that the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry needed beyond the electronic chain of custody systems.

Screening provides a quick initial assessment for drugs of abuse. Though Screening is an affordable way to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for legal purposes. All samples indicating potential positivity during Screening warrant a secondary confirmation.

If the Screening stage suggests a sample is positive, further hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from the hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome is done via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples deemed presumptively positive are washed as required prior to confirmation. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation by ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a brief detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: It’s challenging to outsmart a hair drug test, making the results more reliable.
  • Offers historical insights: It can reveal drug usage patterns over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
