Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Alvord, Iowa. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol examination, we specialize in hair testing and maintain centers nationwide capable of conducting these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or other body parts can be used. Our hair tests cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, and can be tailored to specific needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common choice for drug testing methods. Employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse professionals favor hair tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are ideal for institutions with strict drug-use policies because they have a longer detection window, up to 90 days, and involve an observed collection, making them difficult to tamper with. However, urine tests are still preferred for detecting recent usage within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol use. Hair captures a historical record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol use over a period of approximately three months. It's easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to mail.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of about 200 strands (similar to the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, will provide about 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG tests, add-ons, or tests beyond ten panels, it is advisable to collect 150mg of the sample. It's recommended to weigh the hair sample using a jeweler's scale. In cases where scalp hair cannot be collected, an equivalent amount of body hair should be gathered. The term "head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" pertains to all other types, including facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing to obtain a drug test result involves four major steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning marks the beginning of integrating a sample within a laboratory’s network. This encompasses ensuring the sample's seal and proper shipment, issuing a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputting any supplementary data not included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial assessment for drugs of abuse. Although it’s a cost-efficient method to clear drug usage in most samples, a screen showing positive needs confirmation for legal validity. Samples flagged as presumptively positive during Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

If a Screening phase reveals a sample as potentially positive, additional hair from the initial collection is allocated for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other techniques (like urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug testing.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Required presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire laboratory process is reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and is accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use over 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a lesser detection span.
  • Hard to deceive: A hair drug test is tough to manipulate, ensuring more reliability.
  • Historical patterns: It provides a historical analysis of drug use over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting new use: Drugs become detectable in hair after around 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually cost more than alternative methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal variances in hair growth might influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite the term "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
