Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Archer, Iowa. Our expertise in hair drug and alcohol testing is backed by our nationwide network of testing centers. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is required. We offer analyses for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored testing options.

Hair follicle drug testing has become the preferred method in recent years. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts prefer this over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle testing serves those with strict no-drug-use policies, enhancing its appeal to employers, courts, and probation officers. Its primary advantage lies in its longer detection window—up to 90 days—making it hard to manipulate. However, urine tests remain the most precise for recent drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a comprehensive history of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. Obtaining hair near the scalp can offer up to around a 3-month detection period for both alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to gather, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of approximately 200 strands of hair (similar in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is the preferred amount for testing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It's suggested to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent portion of body hair can be used. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair, while body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result includes four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase of incorporating a sample into a lab's system. This step ensures the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial evaluation for signs of drug use. Although Screening is economical for dismissing drug use in most samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation to be valid in legal proceedings. Samples that appear positive during Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation.

If a sample shows a potential positive result during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations much lower than in other methods (ex. urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging to execute.

The Confirmation of positive screening results is done via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation, as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests uncover drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a narrower detection period.
  • Challenging to falsify: Hair drug tests are difficult to fake, lending greater accuracy to the results.
  • Supplies historical insight: It unveils a timeline of drug use, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect immediate use: Drugs require about 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other methods.
  • Results can vary: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Though commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Archer, IA, hair follicle tests are favored over traditional urine tests due to their superior ability to detect long-term drug use. Unlike urine tests that offer a limited detection window, hair tests provide a broader timespan, ensuring a deeper analysis into drug usage patterns. Employers and authorities find this invaluable for maintaining high standards of safety and integrity.

Extended Detection Window

Employing hair follicle testing in Archer, IA, grants companies a more extensive timeframe to detect drug use—up to 90 days. This extended detection capability provides a comprehensive view of an individual's substance use history, assisting employers in making informed decisions about potential and current employees, thus enhancing workforce reliability.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Archer, IA, hair follicle tests provide a robust solution against sample tampering. These tests substantially lower the risk of adulteration, offering reliable and conclusive results. With hair testing, stakeholders gain confidence in the results, knowing the risk of sample manipulation is minimal, ensuring fairness and accuracy in each test.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
