Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Arion, Iowa. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol screening, we specialize in hair testing and have centers in cities nationwide ready to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your scalp or body are necessary. Our hair tests can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Recently, drug testing has increasingly utilized hair follicle drug tests. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts now prefer these tests over the conventional urine tests. They are employed by those with zero-tolerance drug policies, by the judicial system, and for probationary supervision. The key advantage is the extended detection period of up to 90 days; the collection is observed and nearly tamper-proof. For recent drug use within five days, however, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a comprehensive timeline of alcohol and other drug use by capturing biomarkers within its fibers as it grows. When collected near the scalp, hair can provide a detection period of roughly three months for alcohol and various drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 strands of hair (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp, will yield 100mg, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation tests. For EtG, add-on tests, or anything exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is recommended. It is advised to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In cases where scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. By head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types, such as facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four major steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial sample processing within a lab system. This phase includes confirming that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any necessary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening signifies an initial and swift assessment for traces of drug usage. While Screening offers a cost-efficient means to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive Screening result necessitates confirmation to be valid in legal settings. Samples that return a presumptive positive result during Screening require additional confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive within the Screening stage, more hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods, such as urine or oral fluid testing, which is why hair testing is considered the most complex method.

Confirmation for positive Screening results is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that yield a presumptive positive are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is thoroughly audited according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a more limited detection timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: A hair drug test is very difficult to deceive, ensuring more accurate results.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test scrutinizes the hair strand itself instead of the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
