In Arnolds Park, Iowa, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug analyses. If you're in need of drug or alcohol testing, our centers specialize in hair tests and are available in numerous cities across the nation for your convenience. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of crown or body hair is enough for the test. We provide analyses for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specialized hair testing services.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a preferred method in drug testing. They're now often required by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals over traditional urine tests. Organizations with strict anti-drug policies, courts, and probation programs favor hair tests. The major advantage is its extended detection timeframe of up to 90 days, due to the observed collection process, making tampering nearly impossible. However, for recent substance use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as a key method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair encases biomarkers within the strands as it grows, offering a long-term record of alcohol and drug usage. When taken directly from the scalp, hair allows for an approximately three-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Collection is straightforward, difficult to tamper with, and simple to send.

A sample of around 200 hair strands measuring 1.5 inches (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) from near the scalp equates to 100mg, which is the perfect amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or panels beyond 10, a specimen of 150mg is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen. If scalp hair is not an option, the same amount of body hair can be utilized. When mentioning head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair, while body hair covers all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The main procedures within the laboratory analysis of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the primary handling of a sample within a lab system. This stage ensures the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any needed supplemental data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for possible drug presence. Although Screening is an economical approach to eliminate drug use in many cases, any screened positives require Confirmation for legal validity. Presumptively positive samples during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

For samples assumed positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial sample and set aside for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at notably lower concentrations than alternative methods (such as urine or oral fluids), proving why hair drug testing is the most challenging technique.

Positive screening outcomes undergo Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives are cleaned before confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory protocol from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standard and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use up to 90 days back, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to falsify: Manipulating hair drug test results is extremely challenging, enhancing the reliability.
  • Shows usage history: It can illustrate a trend of drug use over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify immediate use: It typically takes around 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier than other drug test methodologies.
  • Result discrepancies: Aspects like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Frequently termed "hair follicle tests," these tests analyze the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
