Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Arthur, Iowa. If a hair-based drug or alcohol analysis is required, our expert team has you covered, with test facilities available in every city across the U.S.A. For valid results, you should have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head's crown or other parts of your body. This test can evaluate drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing options.

In recent years, the frequency of employing hair follicle drug exams has increased. Numerous employers, judicial authorities, and substance misuse experts now prefer hair tests over typical urine assessments. Companies with strict no-drug-use policies, legal courts, and probationary individuals often employ hair follicle tests. These tests provide an extended detection window of approximately 90 days, are collected under observation, and are nearly impossible to compromise. However, for detecting recent drug usage within the past five days, urine assessments remain the preferred option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a potent method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair traps biomarkers in its fibers, providing a long-term record of substance use. When sampled near the scalp, it can offer a detection window of up to three months for drugs and alcohol. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields about 100mg of hair, which is optimal for analysis and verification. For EtG, extended panels, and/or evaluations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. It is suggested to weigh the sample using a jewelry scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a comparable portion of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, we refer exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test consists of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory's framework. This step ensures the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplementary data input not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid evaluation for drugs of abuse. Although Screening offers a cost-efficient means to exclude drug usage in most samples, any positive findings must undergo confirmation to be courtroom admissible. Presumptive positive samples in Screening necessitate further verification.

If a sample yields a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is drawn from the initial collection and prepared for Extraction. At this juncture, drugs are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration than in different methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening a highly complex method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is conducted through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is carried out under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter window.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, ensuring more precise results.
  • Longitudinal data: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than other drug testing alternatives.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair pigmentation and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration within the hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the assessment is conducted on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Arthur, IA, hair follicle testing outperforms traditional urine tests in several key areas. Hair tests offer a significantly wider detection window, capturing substance usage over time, providing employers with more comprehensive data than a standard urine test.

The consistency and reliability of hair testing make it preferable. While urine tests may display recent usage, hair analysis provides a deeper insight into patterns over months, ensuring more precise and trustworthy results.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Arthur, IA, stands out with its extended detection window. This method can track substance use for up to 90 days, allowing companies to obtain a full picture of an employee's or candidate's substance history.

This broad detection capability surpasses the limits of other methods, making it invaluable for employers seeking clarity on long-term usage habits. This test provides a detailed understanding of an individual’s behavior.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Arthur, IA, hair follicle testing offers a tamper-resistant approach, dramatically minimizing the chance of sample adulteration. The test ensures authentic, reliable results, guarding against manipulation.

This level of integrity is vital for employers who need dependable data to make informed decisions. Hair testing’s resistant nature provides an assurance that the outcomes reflect actual substance use history.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
