Accredited Drug Testing provides complete hair follicle drug testing services in Barnum, Iowa. For those in need of hair drug or alcohol testing, we are experts in this testing method. We operate centers in every city Nationwide capable of conducting hair testing. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is typically required. Hair tests detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer customized testing options.

In recent times, drug testing methods have increasingly shifted towards hair follicle drug tests, which are favored by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals over the traditional urine tests. Hair tests are preferred by employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and for probation monitoring. Hair follicle tests boast a prolonged detection window of up to 90 days and are conducted under observation, making them tough to fake. However, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective resource for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair holds a comprehensive record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the expanding hair strand. When gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches and comprising around 200 strands (approximately the girth of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the preferred quantity for screening and validation. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or examinations beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest weighing the collected sample using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent amount of body hair can be gathered. When discussing head hair, we are exclusively addressing scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

Four principal stages comprise the lab handling of a drug test outcome: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves initially logging a sample into a lab’s framework. This process encompasses confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial rapid assessment for substance abuse. Although Screening is a budget-friendly approach to exclude drug use across most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for legal admissibility. All samples with presumptive positives in Screening must have secondary confirmation.

Should a sample yield a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. At this juncture, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than those in alternate methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis the most challenging to conduct.

Validation of any positive screen is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Every presumptive positive sample undergoes washing ahead of validation if necessary. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Lengthy detection period: Hair drug screenings can identify drug usage for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Difficult to falsify: Hair drug testing is notably hard to deceive, enhancing the reliability of the results.
  • Supplies historical context: It can trace a drug usage pattern over an extended timeline, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to register in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than alternative testing methods.
  • Fluctuations in outcomes: Variables such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
