Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Baxter, Iowa. For those in need of hair drug or alcohol testing, our specialty is hair testing. We have testing centers across every city in the USA that can conduct a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body may be used. Hair tests can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other specific testing requirements.

In recent developments, drug testing protocols increasingly involve hair follicle tests. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals often prefer them over traditional urine tests. These tests are essential for organizations with zero-tolerance policies, legal systems, and probationary monitoring. The key advantage of hair follicle tests is their extended detection period of up to 90 days. They are collected under supervision and are almost impossible to tamper with. However, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair provides a comprehensive history of drug and alcohol intake by capturing biomarkers in the strands of the growing hair. When taken near the scalp, hair offers up to a roughly three-month period for detecting alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly equivalent to the diameter of a #2 pencil) adjacent to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the perfect quantity for analysis and validation. For EtG, extra tests, and tests over 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale is suggested for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair can be utilized. When mentioning head hair, we refer to scalp hair solely. Body hair encompasses all other varieties (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test result includes four principal stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the primary processing of a specimen into the lab's framework. This step ensures the sample is properly sealed and transported, assigns a randomized LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and enters any necessary data not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening delivers a prompt preliminary assessment for the presence of drugs. Although Screening is economical for initially excluding drug use for most specimens, positive findings necessitate confirmation for legal acceptance. Any samples that exhibit presumptive positives during Screening require secondary validation.

Should a specimen show a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original collection and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at concentrations much lower than other methods (like urine or oral samples), highlighting why hair drug analysis is a more intricate process.

Verification of any positive screening result occurs through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples showing presumptive positive are washed before validation if necessary. The entire process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 certification.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine testing which offers a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to falsify: It is extremely challenging to deceive a hair drug test, ensuring more accurate outcomes.
  • Chronicles past usage: It can demonstrate a drug use pattern over time, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expenditure: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other testing techniques.
  • Inconsistencies in findings: Variables such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often referred to as "hair follicle tests", the actual test examines the hair shaft and not the follicle beneath the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
