Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle tests in Beaverdale, Iowa. If you're in need of a drug or alcohol analysis, our centers nationwide, including Beaverdale, specialize in these tests. Typically, you'll need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body. Hair analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing options.

In recent years, drug testing methods increasingly incorporate hair follicle analysis. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals prefer these over urine tests. Hair tests are chosen by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and individuals under probation. The main advantage is a longer detection period of up to 90 days, making it tough to cheat, although urine tests remain effective for detecting recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a compelling method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a chronological record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibres of the active hair shaft. A sample taken near the scalp can reveal alcohol and drug usage over approximately a 90-day period. Hair sample collection is straightforward, tough to tamper with, and convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch sample of roughly 200 hairs (similar in width to a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is an ideal amount for both screening and verification. For EtG assessments, supplemental tests, and/or analyses beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. It’s suggested to measure the sample on a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be inadequate, a comparable quantity of body hair can be utilized. “Head hair” specifically means scalp hair only. “Body hair” encompasses all other varieties like facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory drug testing procedure consists of four fundamental steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves initially incorporating a sample into the lab’s system. This step verifies that the sample was appropriately sealed and delivered, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes extra data entry that an electronic chain of custody might not cover.

Screening is a preliminary check for drugs of potential misuse. Although Screening is an economical method to dismiss drug usage for many samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be legally valid. Any samples flagged as presumptively positive during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If Screening results in a presumptive positive, more hair is derived from the original sample for Extraction. In this step, drug compounds are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluids), rendering hair drug screening a highly challenging approach.

Any positive screening results are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab procedure, from Accessioning through to Confirmation, is audited under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can register drug activity for as long as 90 days, whereas urine tests have a comparatively shorter detection period.
  • Resistant to deception: Manipulating a hair drug test is quite challenging, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Documents usage history: This test can track drug consumption trends over time rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs require about 5-7 days before becoming traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing options.
  • Result inconsistencies: Hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually involves the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Wins Over Urine Testing in Beaverdale, IA is simple—distinct benefits stand out. While both are used, hair testing offers superior detection timeframes of up to 90 days, overshadowing urine's shorter span.

The hair's molecular composition retains drug traces longer, meaning greater accuracy and reliability in identifying habitual use, unlike the limited window of urine tests.

Extended Detection Window

Employers in Beaverdale, IA benefit from the extended detection window of hair follicle tests. These tests trace drug use up to 90 days, offering a clearer picture of an individual's history.

This longer window ensures a thorough review of an applicant's or employee's past involvement with substances, thus enhancing decision-making processes in various institutions.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The hair follicle test is a tamper-resistant method, minimizing risks of sample manipulation in Beaverdale, IA. The process inherently prevents adulteration, ensuring credible results.

With sophisticated testing and collection techniques, hair samples maintain their integrity, providing assurance that results reflect accurate substance profiles.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
