Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Belknap, Iowa. Specialized in hair testing, our centers are located nationwide, ensuring access to tests for hair drug or alcohol usage. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed for these tests. Options include drugs, alcohol/ETG analysis, or customized testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle testing has become a more popular method for drug detection. Employers, legal entities, and substance abuse advisers favor hair tests over urine tests. Particularly effective for enforcing zero-tolerance policies, the primary advantage is its extended detection window, up to 90 days, via an observed and tamper-resistant collection process. Urine tests remain the best for detecting recent use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair tests have emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of substance use by embedding biomarkers in the strands during growth. When gathered close to the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol use up to around a 3-month period. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch length comprising approximately 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest weighing the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable amount of body hair can be utilized. When we mention head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test result comprises four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Within Accessioning, a sample is initially integrated into the laboratory's system. This stage includes ensuring the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary quick evaluation for substance misuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient technique for excluding drug use for most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be court-admissible. Any Screening samples that show presumptive positivity require further confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is drawn from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples at this stage are washed appropriately for confirmation. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined following both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can disclose drug use up to 90 days back, whereas urine tests possess a shorter detection timeframe.
  • High difficulty to evade: Hair drug tests are very hard to falsify, thus yielding more reliable results.
  • Displays historical patterns: It reveals a timeline of drug consumption, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite the common term "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Belknap, IA, hair follicle testing surpasses traditional urine tests by providing superior detection accuracy. While urine tests detect recent consumption, hair tests reveal a longer history of drug usage. With their long detection window and minimal fraud risk, hair tests offer a more thorough understanding of an individual’s substance use.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Belknap, IA, offers a considerably wider detection window, effectively identifying drug use for up to 90 days. This extended evaluation period allows employers to gain a deeper insight into an applicant's or staff member's substance history, facilitating informed decision-making processes in hiring and management.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
