Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Benton, Iowa. Whether in need of drug or alcohol analysis, we excel in hair testing with centers across all Nationwide locations proficient in administering hair assessments. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body will suffice. Hair evaluations can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or facilitate specific testing needs.

Lately, hair follicle drug testing has been increasingly favored for substance assessment. Many companies, judicial systems, and substance management experts are shifting to hair analysis over conventional urine methods. Hair follicle examinations uphold zero-tolerance rules for substance usage within workplaces, courts, and probation scenarios. A notable advantage is its extended detection window of approximately 90 days, gathered through a monitored process, and its robust resistance to tampering. However, for detecting recent use within 5 days, urine tests remain superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can maintain a long-term history of alcohol and drug usage by embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When sourced near the scalp, hair samples can offer a detection period of up to three months for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and easy to send.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches comprised of about 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp equates to 100mg of hair, which is the ideal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests that exceed 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is suggested. We advocate for weighing the hair on a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair not be available, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result consists of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial intake of a sample into a laboratory’s system. It involves confirming that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any necessary data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a preliminary, swift examination for substances of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive screening result must be validated for court acceptance. Any samples that register as presumptively positive in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

If a sample indicates a presumptive positive during the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial supply and made ready for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are separated from hair at concentrations significantly lower than those in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), demonstrating why hair drug screening presents the most challenging testing methodology.

Verification of any positive screen is accomplished using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all samples indicated as presumptive positives are washed if necessary. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes scrutiny under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and is accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests capture a shorter timeframe.
  • Cheating is difficult: Cheating a hair drug test is challenging, thereby enhancing result reliability.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides a timeline of drug use over an extended timeframe, beyond just current consumption.

Limitations:

  • Does not detect recent usage: Drugs take about 5-7 days to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than alternate drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Variables like hair color and individual growth patterns can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the test itself analyzes the hair strand and excludes the scalp's hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
