Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Berkley, Iowa. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialty lies in hair testing, and we have facilities in every city across the nation ready to conduct these tests. Typically, hair from the crown of the head must be 1.5 to 2 inches long, though body hair can also be used. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized testing options.

In the past few years, hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity for drug screenings. Many employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts now opt for hair tests over the usual urine tests. Hair follicle testing is favored by employers, courts, and probation officers due to its zero-tolerance stance. Its key advantage is a broader detection timeframe for drug use, usually up to 90 days, observed during collection and hard to tamper with. Yet, for recent drug use detection within five days, urine tests remain superior.

What it is, How it works

Recognized as a potent instrument in identifying drug and alcohol consumption, hair analysis captures a comprehensive history by encasing biomarkers within the developing hair strand's fibers. When hair is sourced near the scalp, it can reveal a usage span of nearly three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and easily transportable.

Collecting a 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplemental tests, or analyses beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advisable. It is suggested to measure the specimen's weight using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair might be sourced. Head hair references are specific to scalp hair alone. On the other hand, body hair encompasses all other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test result encompasses four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the sample's initial integration into a lab's system. The process includes ensuring the sample’s appropriate sealing and dispatch, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data documentation absent in an electronic chain of custody setup.

Screening conducts a preliminary swift examination for drugs of abuse. Though Screening is a budget-friendly method to exclude drug intake from most samples, court eligibility requires a positive screen's confirmation. Samples indicated as presumptively positive during Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation process.

For samples indicated as presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are withdrawn from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug screening is among the most challenging methods to accomplish.

Confirmation for any positive screening result utilizes GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any presumptive positive specimens are cleansed before confirmation as required. The entire progression from Accessioning to Confirmation is subjected to scrupulous review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and acquiescence to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug assessments can identify drug consumption up to 90 days, unlike urine assessments which offer a reduced detection span.
  • Difficulty to cheat: The difficulty in manipulating a hair drug test contributes to heightened accuracy of results.
  • Provides historical data: It reflects a timeline of drug use over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Cost: Generally, hair drug tests entail a higher cost compared to other testing modalities.
  • Variations in results: Aspects like hair color and individual nuances in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", the examination pertains to analyzing the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
