Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Bernard, Iowa. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is a leader in hair testing, providing access to testing centers across all cities Nationwide where hair tests can be conducted. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is sufficient. Hair tests can analyze substances like drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly included hair follicle drug tests. A growing number of employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts require hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and individuals on probation frequently use hair follicle drug tests. The primary advantage is the significantly long detection period for drug use, often up to 90 days, conducted under observation, making it nearly impossible to cheat. However, for recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain highly accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for detecting the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair captures and retains biomarkers within the fibers as it grows, offering a prolonged detection history. When taken near the scalp, it delivers up to an approximately 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is uncomplicated, challenging to tamper with, and easy to send.

A sample of roughly 200 hair strands measuring 1.5 inches (comparable to a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg, a preferred amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG assessments, additions, and tests beyond 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for specimen measurement. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a similar quantity of body hair can be utilized. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair. "Body hair" encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug testing laboratory process comprises four main stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary handling of a sample into a lab's system, ensuring it is well-sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and concluding any extra data input absent in an electronic custody chain system.

Screening performs an initial rapid check for drug substances. While it's a budget-friendly approach to rule out drug use in most samples, a positive outcome must be verified to be court-admissible. All samples showing a presumed positive in Screening require further confirmation.

If Screening indicates a presumed positive result, additional hair is extracted from the primary sample for the Extraction phase. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at a lower concentration than other techniques such as urine or oral fluid, which is why hair drug screening is the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any positive Screening results occurs via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all samples presumed positive are washed as needed. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and with ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests detect drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter window.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, enhancing accuracy.
  • Offers historical data: Shows a pattern of drug usage over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to be detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than alternative methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can change drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
