Comprehensive drug testing is available in Berwick, Iowa, through Accredited Drug Testing. For anyone requiring hair drug or alcohol analysis, our centers nationwide, including all cities, can conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp or body hair is required. This testing method allows for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other options to be examined.

Increasingly, hair follicle testing is being integrated into drug testing regimes. Employers, judicial systems, and substance misuse specialists now prioritize hair tests over urine ones. Used by organizations with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation offices, these tests offer extended drug use detection over 90 days, under secure observation, making them hard to falsify. However, for recent drug use within a five-day frame, urine testing still prevails in accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a lasting record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. Collecting hair near the scalp offers about a three-month detection window for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion comprising approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) cut closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. It's suggested to weigh the specimen using a jewelry scale. If scalp hair isn't accessible, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. By head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

In the lab, a drug test result undergoes four principal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary processing of a sample into the lab’s system. This encompasses confirming proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial, rapid evaluation for drug abuse. Although Screening is cost-effective for ruling out most samples, a positive screen must be verified to be legally admissible. Samples presumptively positive in Screening require further confirmation.

If Screening suggests a sample is positive, additional hair is taken from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. This phase involves removing drugs from hair at a lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which attributes to the complexity of hair drug testing.

Confirmation of any preliminary positive Screening result is carried out via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are cleansed as necessary prior to confirmation. Throughout the laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, stringent review under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation is maintained.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection range: Hair drug tests can identify drug use spanning up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Establishes drug use trends: It presents a history of drug utilization over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to spot recent usage: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to register in hair.
  • Price: Hair drug tests usually incur higher costs than alternative testing methods.
  • Result discrepancies: Variables like hair color and personal differences in hair growth might impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the test involves analyzing the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Berwick, IA involves comparing the detection capabilities of hair versus urine tests. Hair tests boast superior accuracy, with a detection window that spans far beyond what urine tests offer. Employers can rely on this method for better insight into employee drug use.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
