Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Bevington, Iowa. For those requiring alcohol or drug hair analysis, our expertise in hair testing comes with a nationwide network of centers capable of executing these tests. Generally, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is required from the head or body. Hair analyses can be tailored to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, along with personalized hair testing services.

Over the past few years, hair follicle drug testing has gained traction as a preferred method for substance analysis. Employers, judiciary bodies, and Substance Abuse experts are increasingly opting for hair over urine tests. This type of drug screening is favored by organizations enforcing zero-tolerance policies, legal entities, and probation monitors. The foremost advantage is the extended detection timeline, typically reaching up to 90 days, carried out under observation, and is nearly tamper-proof. Although a urine test remains the most effective for detecting recent usage within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as a long-term record of alcohol and drug intake by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer up to about a 3-month period for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of approximately 200 hairs (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will offer 100mg of hair, the perfect sample for testing and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It is recommended to measure the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not present, a comparable amount of body hair can be collected. When referencing head hair, we mean scalp hair only. Body hair includes all other hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in the lab processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial intake of a sample into a lab’s system. This involves confirming the sample was sealed and sent properly, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any additional data entry not included by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial quick evaluation for drug abuse. While Screening is an economical way to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples tentatively positive in Screening need a further confirmation.

In the event of a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, more hair is taken from the original sample and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at notably lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most challenging methods to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive result from screening is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples preliminarily positive are cleaned before confirmation when needed. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed by both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection time.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Cannot spot recent usage: It usually takes 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally pricier than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors including hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand and not the follicle under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Bevington, IA, the preference for hair follicle testing over urine testing is ever-growing. With advantages like enhanced detection precision and reliability, hair testing is emerging as a superior option. While urine tests might catch recent drug use, hair tests are more reliable when considering long-term usage patterns, providing high accuracy that companies and legal organizations find invaluable.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
