Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Blue Grass, Iowa. Whether you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is unparalleled, with facilities available across the country to conduct these specific tests. Generally, a 1.5 to 2-inch sample from the crown or body is sufficient. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other analyses.

Over recent years, the preference for hair follicle drug tests has surged. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse specialists are increasingly mandating them over traditional urine tests. These tests are favored by companies with strict drug-free policies, legal institutions, and for probation oversight. The key advantage is an extended drug use detection window, usually up to 90 days, collected under observation, making cheating nearly impossible. However, for the detection of recent use within 5 days, urine tests remain most effective.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments are increasingly recognized as an effective approach for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a chronic record of substances by entrapping biomarkers in the fibers of the lengthening hair strands. Collected near the scalp, hair can offer up to roughly a 3-month window for substance and alcohol detection. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively not easy to manipulate, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of about 200 hair strands (similar in dimension to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg, the optimal sample for evaluation and verification. For investigations such as EtG, additional tests, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It's suggested that the sample be weighed using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be missing, a corresponding amount of body hair can be retrieved. When discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair pertains to all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary phases integral to the lab processing of a substance testing result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails initiating the entrance of a sample into a laboratory’s protocol. This encompasses confirming that the sample was adequately sealed and mailed, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any supplementary data input absent from an electronic chain of custody record.

Screening pertains to an initial rapid evaluation for substance misuse. While Screening serves as an economical method to exclude substance use for most samples, a positive outcome demands confirmation for legal acceptance. Every sample that yields a presumptively positive result during Screening mandates additional verification.

Upon a presumptive positive finding in the Screening phase, extra hair is extracted from the primary sample and prepped for Extraction. At this phase, substances are isolated from hair at lower concentrations compared to alternative methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair substance testing is a challenging methodology to execute.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is undertaken using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if required. The whole lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation plus the accreditation for ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can ascertain drug usage for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a briefer detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to deceive: It's considerably difficult to falsify a hair drug test, resulting in more accurate conclusions.
  • Offers chronological information: It can exhibit a sequence of substance usage over time, beyond merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent usage: It generally takes between 5-7 days for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually incur higher costs than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Variability in outcomes: Elements like hair color and individual discrepancies in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the test itself evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
