Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Boyden, Iowa. For those in need of hair drug or alcohol tests, we specialize in such diagnostics, and have nationwide centers available. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required for testing. Hair analyses can reveal the presence of drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other substances upon request.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle testing. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts often prefer this over traditional urine tests. These tests are favored by employers upholding strict no-drug policies and those managing probations. Their key advantage lies in a 90-day detection window, monitored collecting, and resistance to tampering. However, urine tests remain superior for detection within the first 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair examination has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and drug presence by embedding biomarkers in the strands of developing hair. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeframe of up to about 3 months for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient for transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising roughly 200 hair strands (similar to the girth of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is ideal for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's suggested to weigh the sample on a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a similar quantity of body hair can be gathered. By head hair, we specify scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary stages in processing a drug test result in the lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab's framework. This step includes confirming the sample’s sealed and proper shipment, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial expedient evaluation for drugs of abuse. Though Screening is a cost-efficient means of negating drug use in most samples, a confirmed screen is necessary for court admissibility. Any samples that appear positive during Screening require additional confirmation.

If a sample appears positive in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the primary specimen for Extraction preparation. During this stage, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug screening is the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any positive Screen result is accomplished through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples indicating positive results are cleansed prior to confirmation when necessary. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review according to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug intake for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection window.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is notably challenging to tamper with a hair drug test, making the results more credible.
  • Provides chronological data: It reflects a pattern of drug consumption over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: It typically takes around 5-7 days for drugs to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result inconsistency: Variables like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although frequently termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When it comes to drug testing in Boyden, IA, hair follicle testing stands out as superior to the conventional urine test. A key advantage is its remarkable detection accuracy. Unlike urine tests, which have a limited detection period, hair tests can reveal substance use over an extended time. This distinction makes them invaluable for entities enforcing strict no-drug policies.

Beyond accuracy, hair testing offers unmatched reliability. The meticulously supervised collection process minimizes the likelihood of tampering. As a result, employers and legal professionals lean towards hair tests for their ability to provide a much clearer picture of an individual's substance use history over time, fostering greater confidence in the results.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Boyden, IA, offers a significant benefit through its extended detection window. Unlike other tests, it can trace drug usage up to 90 days prior. This provides employers with a more comprehensive understanding of an employee's or candidate's substance use history, aiding in making informed hiring or retention decisions.

With detection periods extending much further back, hair testing offers a broader spectrum of information. It not only highlights recent substance use but also provides insights into patterns over time, making it an invaluable tool for long-term substance assessment and monitoring, thereby enhancing workplace safety and compliance.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Boyden, IA, the hair follicle test is hailed for its tamper-resistant nature, minimizing potential adulteration risks. The collection and testing processes are designed to ensure the sample remains unaltered, guaranteeing the reliability of test outcomes. This makes hair testing a preferred choice for settings demanding unquestionable evidence of substance use.

With other methods, sample manipulation is a concern. However, the robust measures inherent in hair testing significantly curb this risk. Employers and legal bodies can trust that the collected samples provide an accurate reflection of an individual's drug use, free from the uncertainties of tampered specimens.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
