Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug assessments in Brunsville, Iowa. If you're in need of a drug or alcohol hair test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this field with facilities nationwide supporting hair testing. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required. These tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other analyses.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become a more frequent method for detecting drugs. Employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists often prefer it over traditional urine testing. Hair follicle tests are implemented by employers who enforce strict drug-free policies, judicial courts, and probationary systems. The key advantage of this testing is its extended detection window of up to 90 days, making it highly reliable and challenging to outsmart. Nonetheless, for recent drug use detection within the past 5 days, urine tests still offer the highest accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become recognized as an influential instrument in the identification of drug and alcohol consumption. Hair contains a lasting account of alcohol and other drug use by capturing biomarkers within the filaments of the developing hair strand. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer up to about a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is simple to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to ship.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (about the size of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is recommended. We encourage measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't present, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. When we mention head hair, we are specifically talking about scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four principal stages involved in the lab processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning comprises the primary processing of a sample into a lab’s system. This encompasses confirming the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid assessment for drug use. Although Screening is an economical way to eliminate drug use on most samples, a positive screen needs validation to be admissible in court. Any samples showing presumptive positivity in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptively positive in the Screening stage, additional hair is taken from the original sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in alternative techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is among the hardest methodologies to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if needed. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can identify drug use for up to 90 days, compared to urine tests that have a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to falsify: It is exceedingly challenging to falsify a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can display a pattern of drug usage over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent usage: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug assessments are typically more costly than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Despite often being referred to as "hair follicle tests", the assessment examines the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
