Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Buckeye, Iowa. Whether testing for drugs or alcohol, our specialization in hair analysis is supported by a nationwide network of testing facilities. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed for testing. Hair samples can be used to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Hair follicle testing has become more common in recent years for drug detection. This method is preferred by many employers, legal bodies, and substance abuse experts over traditional urine tests. Hair tests, favored by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probation cases, offer extended detection up to 90 days, are closely monitored, and are highly resistant to tampering. Despite this, urine tests remain the best for detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended timeline of substance use by encasing biomarkers within the hair as it grows. If collected near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample size of 1.5 inches, typically around 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is optimal for initial screenings and confirmations. For EtG assessments, additional tests, or those exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is recommended. In the absence of scalp hair, an equal quantity of body hair can be obtained. References to head hair imply only scalp hair, whereas body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory drug test procedure encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning marks the sample’s initial integration into a laboratory system. Verification of the sample’s proper sealing and shipping, assignment of a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and the completion of any supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system are all part of this stage.

Screening conducts a preliminary, rapid assessment for drug presence. While Screening offers a budget-friendly method to exclude drug use from the majority of samples, a positive indication requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples showing a presumptive positive during Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

If a sample is deemed presumptively positive during Screening, further hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction phase. Drugs are removed from hair at a comparatively lower concentration than in other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug testing one of the most challenging methodologies.

Confirmation of any positive result from Screening is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Samples testing presumptive positive are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The complete process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection period.
  • Difficult to bypass: It’s notably hard to falsify a hair drug test, ensuring greater result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: It provides a record of drug use over time, rather than merely noting recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs typically become detectable in hair after 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is often costlier compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Buckeye, IA

Hair follicle testing offers distinct advantages over urine testing, mainly its enhanced detection window and tamper-proof nature. Unlike urine tests, which have a limited detection period, hair tests can uncover drug use history over months. In Buckeye, IA, employers increasingly prefer hair testing for its ability to provide a detailed view of applicants or employees' substance habits.

Superior Reliability

While urine tests are the traditional choice, hair follicle testing's reliability surpasses it. It mitigates common issues like sample adulteration, offering a near-uncheatable method. This makes it the preferred choice for organizations in Buckeye, IA, ensuring a drug-free workplace with greater confidence in the testing results.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
