Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle substance testing services in California Junction, Iowa. If you are in need of hair substance testing, our expertise in this area ensures accurate results, with facilities across the nation providing these tests. With 1.5 to 2 inches of hair required from the scalp or body in many cases, these tests can identify substances, alcohol/ETG, or offer personalized testing solutions.

The use of hair follicle analysis for drug detection has increased in recent times. A growing number of companies, judicial systems, and addiction specialists prefer this method over traditional urine analysis. Hair testing suits entities with a strict no-drug policy, legal systems, and probationary supervision due to its extended detection timeframe, which spans up to 90 days, collected under supervision, making it highly tamper-resistant. However, urine tests remain the method of choice for detecting recent use within a five-day timeframe.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the growing hair fibers. When taken near the scalp, hair offers up to about a 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (akin to the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or assessments beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale is recommended for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair is not an option, a similar amount of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair solely. Body hair pertains to all other kinds (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedures for processing a drug test outcome consist of four pivotal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the preliminary processing of a sample within a lab’s framework. It involves validating that the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any remaining data input not accounted for by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial swift assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical way to eliminate drug usage in most samples, any positive screen must be validated for legal acceptance. Any samples indicating a presumptive positive in Screening need further confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is retrieved from the primary sample and prepared for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration in comparison to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening a more challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumptively positive undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire lab process is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation as well as the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter timeframe for detection.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Manipulating a hair drug test is highly challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Delivers historical context: It can show a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot determine recent intake: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to surface in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug examinations are typically costlier than other drug testing practices.
  • Result variability: Characteristics like hair color and personal hair growth variances can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While frequently called "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
