Employment, Court Ordered, Probation, Family

In the city of Callender, Iowa, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Whether you need a hair drug or alcohol screening, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with facilities available nationwide. Most tests require 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair. Our hair tests can be customized for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other options.

Over the past years, hair follicle testing has become a preferred method for drug screening. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals now opt for this over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are sought by zero-tolerance employers, judicial systems, and individuals on probation due to their extended detection period of up to 90 days, ensuring reliable observations and minimizing cheating. For recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Acknowledged as an effective measure, hair testing serves to detect consumption of drugs and alcohol over an extended period. It achieves this by capturing biomarkers within the growing hair fiber. With hair samples taken near the scalp, a detection span of about three months for both alcohol and other substances is attainable. The collection process is straightforward, resistant to tampering, and convenient for shipping.

For optimal screening and confirmation, a 1.5-inch segment comprising around 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp is needed, translating to around 100mg of hair. For EtG, additional components, and/or assessments beyond 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advisable. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing is recommended. In situations where scalp hair is inaccessible, a comparable quantity of body hair may be gathered. When discussing head hair, it pertains specifically to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other variants (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test results involves four essential stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning constitutes the preliminary sample processing in a laboratory’s framework. This phase assures the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigns a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) randomly, and finalizes any missing data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody.

During Screening, a swift initial evaluation for substance abuse is executed. While this provides a cost-efficient method of ruling out drug usage for most samples, any positive indications warrant confirmation for court acceptability. Hence, presumptively positive samples demand additional confirmation.

Upon detecting a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the primary specimen and readied for the Extraction stage. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair in considerably lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluids), which underscores the complexity of hair drug screening procedures.

For any positive results obtained from screening, Confirmation is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Before confirmation, necessary pre-washing is administered to presumptive positive samples. The complete laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted under the regulation of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests offer a detectability span of up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter timeframe of urine tests.
  • High resistance to tampering: The methods to deceive hair drug tests are scant, thus ensuring greater accuracy of results.
  • Insightful historical data: It facilitates the examination of drug consumption trends over time, rather than merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to determine recent usage: Detection of drugs in hair generally takes about 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Higher cost: Compared to alternative drug testing methods, hair drug tests are typically more costly.
  • Result variability: Differences such as hair color and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests", the process specifically examines the hair strand itself, not the follicle situated beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing outperforms traditional urine testing in Callender, IA, with superior detection accuracy and reliability. While urine tests detect recent drug use, hair tests uncover a wider usage history, providing a holistic view of the subject's substance interaction. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
