Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Cambridge, Iowa. For those seeking a hair drug or alcohol evaluation, our expertise is in hair analysis, with facilities in every city across the Nation ready to conduct these tests. Generally, samples require between 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or other body areas. Hair analyses can investigate drugs, alcohol/ETG, or various tailored testing options.

Recently, the approach to drug assessments increasingly includes hair follicle testing. It's favored by numerous employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts over the standard urine analysis. Hair follicle tests are preferred when stringent no-drug policies are in place by organizations, courts, and probation services. Their primary advantage is an extended detection window for substance use, often reaching 90 days, conducted in a monitored process, making it exceedingly hard to tamper with. Yet, to determine recent usage within a 5-day frame, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a prolonged record of alcohol and drugs by holding biomarkers within the strands' fibers as they grow. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of up to around 3 months for alcohol and drugs. It's easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section comprising about 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is ideal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair is acceptable. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four crucial steps in the laboratory assessment of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the sample's initial introduction into a lab's system, ensuring the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any data entry lacking from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary quick assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be valid in court. Samples that show a presumptive positive in Screening mandate a secondary confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive during Screening, more hair is taken from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are separated from hair at far lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex method to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screen result is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if required. The complete lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under the guidelines of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to deceive: It's extremely challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, which enhances the accuracy of results.
  • Offers historical insights: It can reveal a drug use trend over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs generally require 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other testing methods.
  • Result disparities: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis is conducted on the hair strand rather than the scalp's hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
