In Carbon, Iowa, Accredited Drug Testing provides full-scale hair follicle drug testing services. Whether you need a drug or alcohol hair test, we at Accredited Drug Testing are experts in this field, with testing centers nationwide ready to conduct hair tests. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is typically required from your head or body. These hair tests can detect various substances, including drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored hair testing options.

The use of hair follicle drug tests has surged in recent years as a preferred method for substance testing. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists now favor hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair tests are utilized by employers maintaining strict no-drug policies, legal institutions, and individuals on probation. The key advantage of hair tests is their extended detection period—up to 90 days—collected via an observed procedure, which is nearly impossible to manipulate. However, for detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests still provide the most precise results.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is acclaimed as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. It offers an extensive timeline of alcohol and drug intake by preserving biomarkers within the hair fiber as it grows. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal up to roughly a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, alteration is challenging, and it is convenient for transport.

A sample consisting of 1.5 inches with approximately 200 hair strands (roughly equivalent to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp can yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for screening and validation. For EtG, additional tests, or when the panel exceeds 10, a specimen weighting 150mg is suggested. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is advised. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a comparable quantity of body hair may be used. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four central steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s framework. This process includes confirming that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any data entry not facilitated by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical method to dismiss drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be viable in legal settings. Any samples indicating presumptive positivity in Screening require a follow-up confirmation.

Should a sample appear presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, the extraction of drugs from hair occurs at a significantly reduced concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which renders hair drug screening as the most complex methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples deemed presumptively positive are washed prior to confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory procedure spanning Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and attains accreditation according to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a narrower detection window.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Circumventing a hair drug test is extremely difficult, which enhances result accuracy.
  • Provides historical data: It can illustrate a pattern of drug consumption over a period, not solely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to other drug testing approaches.
  • Variations in results: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Often referred to as "hair follicle tests", the test itself assesses the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Carbon, IA

In assessing drug use, hair follicle testing offers distinct advantages over urine tests. The most prominent edge is the superior detection window, offering insights into usage patterns stretching back months instead of days. This extended period enables employers in Carbon, IA, to garner a comprehensive understanding of employee behaviors, ensuring more informed decision-making.

Superior Detection and Accuracy

Additionally, hair follicle tests provide unrivaled detection accuracy. Urine tests can be susceptible to various factors leading to false negatives or positives; however, hair testing cuts through these anomalies. The reliability of results from hair tests bolsters confidence in findings, assuring users that the detected outcomes are truthful and precise.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Carbon, IA

Hair follicle testing stands out due to its capability to detect drug use over an extended period, typically up to 90 days. This aspect gives employers a detailed view of an individual's substance use history, far surpassing the limited timeframe of urine tests. Using hair samples, employers can make more informed hiring and retention decisions based on comprehensive substance profiles.

A Broad View of Substance Use

Providing a snapshot that spans months, hair follicle testing in Carbon, IA, captures long-term drug use trends, aiding in evaluating an employee or applicant's behavioral consistency. The long detection window serves as a valuable asset for employers who prioritize thorough background checks.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method in Carbon, IA

Hair follicle tests dramatically reduce the risk of sample tampering, ensuring authenticity and integrity of the results. Unlike urine tests, where adulteration strategies can lead to compromised findings, the process of collecting and analyzing hair samples is inherently resistant to manipulation. This characteristic ensures a reliable, incontestable outcome.

Unquestionable Reliability

The likelihood of tampering is minimal, as attempts to cheat the system through shaving or chemical treatments prove futile against sophisticated testing methodologies. For individuals and employers in Carbon, IA seeking trustworthy drug testing methods, hair follicle tests represent a secure choice.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
