Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Casey, Iowa. Specializing in hair and alcohol tests, our experts at Accredited Drug Testing have facilities across all cities nationwide capable of conducting hair analysis. Typically, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown or body hair is required. Testing can be customized for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other substances.

In the past few years, hair follicle drug testing has become a more prevalent method for substance screening. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts often choose hair drug testing over urine testing. The main advantage of hair follicle drug tests is their extended detection window of up to 90 days, ensuring accurate and tamper-proof results. Meanwhile, urine tests remain the best option for detecting drug use within the previous 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has now been regarded as an effective means for detecting alcohol and drug usage. Hair captures a prolonged history of substance use by integrating biomarkers within the strands of the hair as it grows. When collected close to the scalp, hair offers an evaluation window of up to nearly three months for alcohol and other drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and easily transportable.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of approximately 200 strands of hair (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg, the optimal sample size for both initial screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's recommended to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If there's an absence of scalp hair, a similar quantity of body hair can be collected. When we mention head hair, we refer specifically to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other kinds of hair (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four key steps in the lab processing of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first step in processing a sample in the laboratory system. This step involves confirming the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any further data input not provided through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary swift assessment for substances of abuse. While it is a budget-friendly technique to dismiss drug use for most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be permissible in legal scenarios. All samples that show a presumptive positive during Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

If during the Screening stage a sample is found to be presumptively positive, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen for the Extraction process. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair but at a considerably lower concentration than with other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), establishing hair drug screening as the most challenging technique to execute.

Positive screenings are confirmed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptively positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation, if necessary. The complete laboratory process spanning from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted in alignment with CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection range: Hair drug testing is capable of identifying drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to falsify: It is exceedingly challenging to manipulate the results of a hair drug test, thus enhancing the accuracy of the outcomes.
  • Reveals usage trends: This method shows a pattern of substance use over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify recent usage: It typically requires 5-7 days before substances become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other approaches to drug testing.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair pigmentation and individual disparities in hair growth rates can impact drug metabolite concentrations within the hair.

Note: Commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", these tests evaluate the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair Follicle Testing in Casey, IA: A Superior Choice

Compared to traditional methods, hair testing provides unmatched accuracy and reliability in detecting substance use. While urine tests are common, hair follicle tests outperform them with a longer detection window, ensuring employers and judicial systems can trust the results. Such precision helps maintain high standards in diverse environments.

Hair testing's advantage lies in its ability to detect a wide range of substances over an extended period, offering a broader spectrum of analysis. Hair samples are difficult to alter compared to urine, making hair tests an optimal solution for those seeking dependable results. Thus, Casey, IA, embraces this progressive approach to maximize safety and accountability.

Extended Detection Window

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
