Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug evaluations in Chariton, Iowa. For those requiring a hair-related drug or alcohol examination, our expertise lies in hair testing. Our centers span cities across the nation, ready to administer hair assessments. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of cranial or body hair is necessary. Hair assessments can detect various substances, including drugs and alcohol/ETG, or cater to other specific testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has been increasingly adopted as a method for drug screening. Organizations, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts are now favoring hair tests over traditional urine samples. Hair testing is prevalent among employers with stringent no-drug policies, judiciary systems, and probationers. The main advantage of hair follicle drug evaluations is their ability to detect drug use over an extended period, generally up to 90 days, while being nearly foolproof and performed under direct supervision. For detection within the past five days, a urine test remains the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective means for spotting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive history of alcohol and other substances by encasing biomarkers within its strands. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer up to around a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, fairly tamper-resistant, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section comprising about 200 strands of hair (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the perfect amount for screening and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn’t present, an equivalent amount of body hair may be gathered. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four principal stages in the laboratory processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial processing of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This entails ensuring the sample was sealed and sent correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any remaining data entry not managed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial swift assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical method to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be verified for legal admissibility. Any specimens suspected positive in Screening do require secondary verification.

If a specimen is suspected positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening presents a more challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any suspected positive outcome from screening is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a more limited detection timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is incredibly difficult to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides historical context: It can illustrate a pattern of drug use over a span, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of spotting recent use: Detection in hair takes roughly 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Cost factor: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than other testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Though frequently called "hair follicle tests", the test targets the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Within Chariton, IA, hair follicle testing offers significant advantages over urine testing. Accuracy and reliability stand out, as hair testing can detect drug use over a long duration. Urine tests present a limited detection window, whereas hair tests offer a comprehensive view of substance use history.

  • Hair testing's longer window captures more past drug use events.
  • It avoids the pitfalls and potential inaccuracies of urine tests.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection period of hair follicle testing makes it a superior option in Chariton, IA, allowing employers to analyze up to 90 days of substance use history. This duration eclipses that of urine tests, which can't compete with hair testing's long-term efficiency.

  • Employers gain a more thorough understanding of potential hires' drug use history.
  • This is crucial for positions where ongoing sobriety is paramount.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Chariton, IA, hair follicle tests are a robust solution against sample adulteration. Their design reduces tampering risks, delivering credible and indisputable results essential for accurate drug detection.

  • Hair samples are less susceptible to tampering than urinary specimens.
  • The collection method is direct and observed, ensuring authenticity.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
