Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Charleston, Iowa. For those requiring hair drug or alcohol testing, Accredited Drug Testing is proficient in hair analysis, with testing centers everywhere Nationwide ready to process a hair test. Typically, hair of about 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown or body is required. Hair analysis encompasses drugs, alcohol/ETG, or specialized options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become the preferred method for drug assessments. Many employers, legal entities, and substance abuse authorities favor hair over urine tests. It is commonly chosen by workplaces with no drug tolerance policies, judicial systems, and those on probation. A key advantage of hair testing is an extended detection window of up to 90 days, performed under observation, rendering it nearly impossible to tamper with, though urine tests are still more precise for recent 5-day use.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as an effective resource for identifying drug and alcohol intake. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the expanding hair shaft. If acquired close to the scalp, hair can offer up to about a three-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to obtain, somewhat hard to tamper with, and straightforward to send.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of approximately 200 hairs (roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, an optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG add-ons and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, it is advised to have 150mg of the sample. We suggest measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is inaccessible, a comparable quantity of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other kinds (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in the lab process for determining a drug test outcome: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of entering a sample into a lab’s database. This step verifies that the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any outstanding data input not managed by an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening is an initial swift assessment for drugs of misuse. Although Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug consumption in most samples, a positive result from screening must be verified to stand in legal proceedings. Any samples that come up presumptively positive require further confirmation.

If a sample results in a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the starting sample and prepared for Extraction. During this process, substances are extracted from the hair at considerably lower concentrations than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most challenging techniques to execute.

Confirmation of any positive outcome from screening is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The full lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair title and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection span: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption for as long as 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, enhancing the reliability of the findings.
  • Offers historical insight: It can illustrate a trend of drug use over time, not solely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent usage: It generally takes 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are usually more costly than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence the concentration of drug residues in hair.

Note: Commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the test actually evaluates the hair shaft rather than the scalp’s hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
