Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle assessments in Cincinnati, Iowa. If a drug or alcohol evaluation through hair analysis is required, we are specialists in this domain, with center locations in numerous cities nationwide ready to facilitate testing. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of the head or other regions can be used. Specific analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored to other testing requirements.

Lately, drug assessment methods have increasingly included hair follicle tests. This technique is favored by many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts over usual urine exams. Employers adhering to strict no-drug policies, judiciary authorities, and those on probation utilize this test. The main advantage is its longer detection duration for drug usage, lasting up to 90 days, observed real-time, with minimal chances for manipulation. However, for drug usage detection within the past 5 days, urine tests remain superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a comprehensive record of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the hair fiber matrix as it grows. When taken near the scalp, hair can present an up to around 90-day detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

An ideal sample of about 1.5 inches of 200 hair strands (roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil) from the scalp yields 100mg, optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a specimen amount of 150mg is preferred. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for specimen measurement is suggested. Should scalp hair be unavailable, equivalent body hair may be gathered. Note that head hair denotes exclusively scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The critical steps in lab processing for drug test outcomes include: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning marks the initial integration of a sample within a laboratory, entailing the verification of proper sample sealing and shipment, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any data entry absent from the electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a preliminary assessment for substances of misuse. Though Screening serves as an economic approach for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive result must be verified to be legally credible. Samples yielding a tentative positive in Screening require follow-up confirmation.

Should a sample yield a tentative positive during Screening, additional hair from the original specimen is utilized for Extraction. This step isolates drugs from hair at much reduced concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring the complexity of hair drug analysis.

Positive screen confirmation relies on GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Pre-confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are washed as necessary. The complete lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guideline and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests reveal drug use history for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter spans.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, ensuring reliable outcomes.
  • Offers chronological data: Displays a trend of drug use over extended periods, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair about 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Individual hair color and growth rate differences can alter drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While termed "hair follicle tests," actual analysis involves the hair strand, not the scalp-embedded follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
