Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing services in Clare, Iowa. When you require hair drug or alcohol testing, we focus on delivering expert hair analysis with centers available across cities nationwide. For testing, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is generally necessary. Our hair tests span drugs, alcohol/ETG, and custom hair analysis options.

In recent years, the shift toward drug testing methods has increasingly favored hair follicle testing. Employers, legal entities, and Substance Abuse professionals are opting for hair drug tests over the conventional urine tests. Employers with strict zero-tolerance policies, judiciary systems, and probationary services favor hair follicle tests due to their extended detection capabilities, lasting up to 90 days, observed collection, and resistance to tampering. Conversely, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine testing is still the most precise.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing has become a significant asset for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can capture and retain biomarkers within the fiber of the growing strand, providing an extended historical insight into alcohol and drug use. When taken near the scalp, hair samples can reveal up to a three-month detection timeframe for both alcohol and drugs. The collection of hair samples is straightforward and not easily tampered with, plus it's convenient for transportation.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches of around 200 hair strands (approximately equivalent to #2 pencil thickness) nearest to the scalp will supply 100mg of hair, ideal for both screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, around 150mg of specimen is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen. If scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. References to head hair specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair pertains to other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Overview of the Procedure

The drug testing process in the laboratory involves four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is first processed into the lab's system. This includes verifying the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing additional data entry if the electronic chain of custody doesn't cover it.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for substance abuse. Although screening effectively excludes drug use in most samples due to its cost efficiency, results that test positive require confirmation to be considered valid legally. Samples that presumptively test positive during screening must undergo further confirmation.

Should a sample be positively indicated during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction processing. Drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations significantly lower than in other testing methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), making hair drug testing the most challenging method to execute.

Positive results from screening are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methodologies. Prior to confirmation, all samples showing presumptive positives are washed as required. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning through Confirmation is conducted under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Pros of hair drug screening:

  • Sustained detection timeframe: Hair drug screening can uncover drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which offer a shorter timeframe.
  • Tamper-proof results: The difficulty in manipulating hair drug test outcomes increases their reliability.
  • Record of past usage: Provides an overview of drug habits across a duration rather than just recent usage.

Disadvantages:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs generally take 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug screening is generally more costly than other forms of drug testing.
  • Inconsistencies in outcomes: Variables such as hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", this test examines the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Clare, IA, more organizations are recognizing why hair follicle testing surpasses urine testing in efficiency and accuracy. While urine tests are standard, they fall short in detection periods and reliability. Hair follicle testing offers a significantly longer window for detection, capturing drug use traces up to 90 days, where urine tests only detect recent usage. This broader window allows for a comprehensive assessment of an individual's substance use.

Furthermore, hair testing's inherent resistance to tampering provides an added layer of trust, addressing common concerns associated with urine samples. The meticulous collection process eliminates doubts, ensuring unwavering confidence in the results.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Clare, IA provides an extended detection window that outshines other testing methods. Unlike urine or saliva tests, hair samples can reveal drug use over a much larger timeframe, often up to 90 days. This extensive detection period offers employers a broader view of an individual’s drug usage history, ensuring informed hiring and monitoring decisions.

For businesses keen on maintaining a drug-free environment, this lengthy detection period is a critical advantage. It not only aids in identifying potential issues but also assures compliance with industry standards and regulations regarding substance use.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Clare, IA, the tamper-resistant nature of hair follicle testing ensures that results are reliable and trustworthy. Unlike other testing methods, hair samples are collected in a controlled manner that significantly reduces the possibility of adulteration or substitution, ensuring the integrity of the sample and the validity of results.

This resistance to tampering brings a degree of certainty that both employers and individuals rely on. With stringent collection protocols, the chance for altering test outcomes is virtually eliminated, making hair follicle testing a dependable choice in drug detection.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
