In Clemons, Iowa, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Renowned for expertise in hair and alcohol testing, we operate centers across all U.S. cities, providing accessible hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body can serve the test requirements. Our analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or accommodate specific testing needs.

Over recent years, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become a central method for drug analysis. Employers, legal entities, and substance abuse experts favor hair tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation individuals often utilize them, benefiting from their extended detection period up to 90 days and observation during sample collection, making them nearly foolproof. Yet, for recent 5-day drug use, urine tests remain supreme.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a highly effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By embedding biomarkers within the fibers of a growing hair strand, hair offers an extended history of substance use. When obtained near the scalp, it can reveal alcohol and drug usage over an approximate 3-month period. Hair sample collection is straightforward, is somewhat resistant to tampering, and can be easily transported.

A 1.5-inch section containing around 200 hair strands (roughly equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) offers 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation processes. For EtG, additional tests, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. It's best to use a jeweler's scale for weighing the specimen. If hair from the scalp isn't available, a similar amount of body hair can be collected. When referring to head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Conversely, body hair includes all other types of hair (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory drug test processing involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, samples are initially processed into the lab's system, verifying proper sealing and shipping, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and executing any necessary data entry omitted by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary examination for drug abuse. Although it's a cost-efficient method to eliminate most drug usage cases, confirmed results are required for legal scenarios. Thus, any samples preliminarily positive in Screening mandate secondary confirmation.

For samples testing positive initially in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the primary specimen for Extraction. Here, drugs are drawn from the hair at notably lower concentrations than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most formidable technique.

Positive screening outcomes undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Preceding Confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are appropriately washed. The complete lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is assessed per the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and in accordance with ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine evaluations with shorter detection periods.
  • Hard to falsify: Tampering with a hair drug test is challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Chronological data provided: This method demonstrates a drug use pattern over time instead of mere recent consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs require about 5-7 days to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Typically, hair drug tests incur higher costs compared to other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair color and personal hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though frequently termed as "hair follicle tests," the analysis is performed on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
