In Clio, Iowa, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. If a hair or alcohol test is required, our centers across the nation, including in all cities, are equipped to perform these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is necessary from the crown or body. Hair analyses are available for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and customized testing options.

In recent years, hair follicle drug tests have become increasingly prevalent. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts often prefer them over standard urine tests. Used by those with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and those on probation, hair tests offer a longer, up to 90-day detection window. They are collected under supervision, making them nearly impossible to tamper with, although urine tests remain definitive for recent use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now regarded as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. As hair grows, it captures biomarkers within its strands, offering a lengthy history of substance use. When taken near the scalp, hair can detect alcohol and drugs for a period of up to three months. Hair is easy to collect, relatively tough to tamper with, and simple to send.

To obtain a proper sample, a 1.5-inch cut of around 200 hairs (akin to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, perfect for both screening and confirmation tasks. If additional tests like EtG or panels exceeding 10 are needed, 150mg is advised. It's ideal to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In cases where scalp hair isn't accessible, a comparable volume of body hair can be collected. By head hair, we refer solely to scalp hair; in contrast, body hair includes all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The drug test process in a lab is divided into four phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is first entered into the lab's system. This step involves verifying proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigning it a unique Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and finalizing any additional data entry not covered by the electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial, swift assessment for the presence of drugs. It's a cost-efficient method to dismiss drug use in most samples, but any positive results need confirmation to be legally valid. Samples with presumptive positive results from Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should Screening indicate a possible positive, additional hair is extracted from the original batch and readied for Extraction. This phase focuses on isolating drugs from hair at a much lower concentration than is possible with other testing techniques (like urine or oral fluids), thus making hair drug screening the most challenging procedure to execute.

Verification of any positive results from the screening phase happens through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, positive samples undergo washing as required. The complete lab procedure, from Accessioning through to Confirmation, is evaluated within the guidelines of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Unlike urine tests with shorter windows, hair tests can trace drug use for up to 90 days.
  • Hard to manipulate: Tampering with hair drug tests is extremely difficult, ensuring more precise results.
  • Chronicles usage over time: It reveals a timeline of drug consumption, covering patterns rather than only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs only become observable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests cost more compared to other testing methods.
  • Variable results: Factors like hair color, along with personal hair growth differences, can affect drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests," these analyses examine the hair strand itself rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
