Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing solutions in Columbia, Iowa. With specialization in hair drug and alcohol tests, we operate testing facilities across all cities nationwide equipped to conduct hair testing. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body suffices for the test. Hair tests encompass analyses for drugs, alcohol/ETG, along with other tailored testing options.

Recently, the approach to drug testing is increasingly leaning towards hair follicle testing. This method is now preferred by employers, courts, and substance abuse counselors over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are typically requested by employers with strict no-drug policies, court systems, and those managing probation cases. The key advantage of hair tests is their extended detection window, usually covering up to 90 days, collected through an observed method, making cheating nearly impossible. However, urine tests remain the gold standard for recent drug use, within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a significant method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair records a long-term record of substances by embedding biomarkers in the strands of growing hair. Harvested near the scalp, hair can offer an approximately three-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will yield 100mg, which is the ideal quantity for analysis and validation. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, it's optimal to have 150mg of the sample. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing is advisable. If scalp hair isn't available, you can use an equivalent amount of body hair. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary steps within the lab processing for a drug test outcome: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a specimen into a lab’s system. This step involves ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid analysis for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective method to exclude drug use for most samples, any positive result from this stage needs affirmation to be legally tenable. Presumed positive samples in Screening do need a confirmation step.

Samples assumed to be positive after Screening will undergo Extraction, where more hair is prepared from the original sample. This phase strips drugs from hair at a notably lower concentration compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or saliva), illustrating why hair drug testing is notably complex.

Confirmation of any presumptive positive outcome is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumed positive samples are cleansed as necessary before confirmation. The full laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is overseen under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection time: Hair drug tests can register drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: Hair drug tests are very hard to deceive, ensuring more precise results.
  • Show history: They can reveal a timeline of drug use over several months, as opposed to just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent ingestion: Drugs become traceable in hair only after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally require more financial investment than other testing strategies.
  • Result differences: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", these tests analyze the hair strand rather than the scalp-level hair follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

For those debating between hair follicle and urine testing in Columbia, IA, the former offers several advantages. Primarily, its superior detection accuracy over urine tests makes it a preferred choice, providing a more reliable outcome free from uncertainties.

Hair follicle testing can detect a longer history of substance use compared to urine testing. This extended detection period allows businesses to form a more comprehensive assessment of an individual's substance history.

Extended Detection Window

A significant benefit of hair follicle testing in Columbia, IA is its extended detection window. This method can detect drug use for up to 90 days, unlike many traditional testing methods that have a much shorter detection timeframe.

The extended capability of hair tests offers employers a fuller portrait of an individual's substance use history. This is critical when evaluating a candidate's or current employee's behaviors over a considerable duration.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Columbia, IA, tamper-resistant testing methods are crucial for reliable drug test results. Hair follicle tests significantly minimize the risk of sample adulteration, ensuring that results are authentic and trustworthy.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
