Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug evaluations in Croton, Iowa. Seeking a hair-based drug or alcohol examination? Our expertise lies in hair testing, with centers across numerous cities Nationwide to conduct such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of crown or body hair is required. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and provide other tailored hair testing options.

Currently, the approach for drug screening often incorporates hair follicle testing. Increasingly, employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals opt for this method over standard urine testing. This method is favored by employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and individuals on probation. The core advantage of hair follicle tests is their extended drug detection range, generally up to 90 days, coupled with an observed collection method that makes manipulation difficult. Nevertheless, for drug use detected in the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and other drugs by holding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal a drug and alcohol detection timeline of up to about three months. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to falsify, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of approximately 200 strands of hair (similar in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, will yield 100mg of hair, which is the perfect amount for testing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler's scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair covers all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for a drug test result encompasses four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial inclusion of a sample into a lab’s system. This process includes confirming that the sample was appropriately sealed and delivered, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screening result requires confirmation for court admissibility. Any samples that are possibly positive in the Screening need an additional confirmation step.

Should a sample be assumed positive at the Screening stage, more hair is drawn from the original specimen for preparation in the Extraction phase. At this juncture, drugs are extracted from hair in much lower concentrations than those seen in other testing approaches (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcomes is achieved via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results undergo a washing process before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with the ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, compared to urine tests with a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: Provides a timeline of drug use over a duration, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than other drug testing methods.
  • Result discrepancies: Variables like hair color and personal hair growth rates can influence the level of drug metabolites found in the hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand itself and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
