Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Cumberland, Iowa. For those in need of a hair drug or alcohol assessment, our specialists at Accredited Drug Testing focus on hair testing, with centers available in cities nationwide to conduct these tests. Typically, having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the scalp or body is sufficient. Hair tests are utilized to screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized hair testing needs.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have gained popularity in drug testing methods. Many employers, legal institutions, and Substance Abuse experts prefer hair drug tests instead of the usual urine tests. Employers enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and individuals on probation are commonly associated with hair follicle testing. The main advantage is its extended drug detection span, usually up to 90 days, and its observed collection process, making it almost impossible to tamper with. However, for detecting drug use within the past 5 days, the urine test still remains the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a robust method for identifying the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair provides an extended history of alcohol and drug consumption by embedding biomarkers in the strands of developing hair. When sourced near the scalp, hair can offer a detection span of approximately three months for alcohol and various drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising around 200 hair strands (roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is the optimal amount for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, a 150mg amount of the specimen is advised. We suggest using a jeweler's scale for specimen measurement. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable amount of body hair can be collected. When we mention head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The lab procedures for processing a drug test outcome are divided into four main stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step where a sample is entered into a lab's system. This step ensures the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry not done through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening means a preliminary fast check for substance abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective method to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive result needs confirmation for it to be valid in legal contexts. Samples with presumptive positive results in Screening need further confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive result in Screening, additional hair is taken from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are retrieved from hair at significantly lower concentration levels than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology.

Confirming any positive screening result is conducted through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples with presumptive positive results are cleansed before confirmation if needed. The full laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and complies with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug assessments can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection time.
  • Hard to falsify: It's quite challenging to tamper with a hair drug test, enhancing the reliability of results.
  • Provides usage history: It can show a pattern of drug intake over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Can't detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug testing options.
  • Result variability: Differences like hair color and individual hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually assesses the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
