In Dakota City, Iowa, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Our expertise in hair testing is matched by the availability of our centers nationwide, capable of collecting the necessary hair samples for drug or alcohol testing. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair are required. We analyze samples for various substances, alcohol/ETG, or offer specialized testing options.

The trend of using hair follicle drug testing has increased in recent years. Many entities, including employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and substance abuse specialists, now prefer it over urine tests. Hair tests provide a 90-day detection window, employ an observed sample collection reducing the chance of tampering, though urine tests are still preferred for recent drug use detection.

What it is, How it works

Hair examinations have gained recognition as a robust means for the identification of substance and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended record of alcohol and drug usage by encasing biomarkers in the strands of developing hair. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeframe of up to roughly three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair is effortless to collect, relatively challenging to alter, and simple to ship.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for testing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or evaluations exceeding 10 panels, a specimen amount of 150mg is advised. We advocate weighing the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not present, a comparable quantity of body hair may be used. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary stages in the lab processing of a drug result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial handling of a sample within a lab’s framework. This entails verifying that the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any additional data not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary rapid assessment for drug misuse. While Screening serves as a cost-efficient strategy to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for legal admission. Any samples that test presumptively positive in Screening require a secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at considerably lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug testing the most complex methodology to administer.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo a wash prior to confirmation as necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Difficult to manipulate: It is highly difficult to deceive a hair drug test, ensuring more precise results.
  • Supplies historical information: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over a span of time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent usage: It takes about 5-7 days for substances to become discernible in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual growth discrepancies can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis pertains to the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
