Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in Defiance, Iowa. If a hair test for drugs or alcohol is required, we specialize in these tests and have facilities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is necessary for testing. Such tests are effective for drug, alcohol/ETG, or customized analyses.

Hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly popular as a preferred method for analyzing drug use. Many employers, legal entities, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair testing over traditional urine tests. This method benefits employers with zero-tolerance policies and individuals in court or probation settings due to its extended detection window, which spans up to 90 days, ensuring a nearly cheat-proof and observed collection process. When testing for drug use within 5 days, urine tests still prove more accurate.

What it is, How it works

Utilizing hair testing has gained recognition as an effective resource for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When gathered close to the scalp, hair offers a detection period of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and various drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the perfect sample for both screening and confirmation processes. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a specimen of 150mg is advised. We advocate for measuring the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be collected, a comparable quantity of body hair should be obtained. When we mention head hair, it pertains exclusively to scalp hair. In contrast, body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in laboratory processing for drug test outcomes include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial incorporation of a sample into a laboratory’s framework. This step ensures that the sample was correctly sealed and sent, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any additional data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary examination for substances of abuse. Although it is a cost-efficient method to eliminate most drug use cases, a positive screening result must be established to be valid in court settings. Samples indicating a presumptive positive result during Screening mandate further confirmation.

Should a sample indicate a presumptive positive in the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. At this phase, drugs are removed from hair at a considerably lower concentration than in alternate approaches (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which accounts for why hair drug screening is the most challenging method.

Confirmation of any positive screen outcome is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples indicating a presumptive positive are cleansed prior to confirmation as required. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which possess a shorter detection period.
  • Challenge in manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, ensuring more precise results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can illustrate a pattern of drug consumption over time, beyond just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: It takes an estimated 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth diversities can influence the drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While frequently termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
