Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Delaware, Iowa. If you require a hair analysis for drugs or alcohol, we specialize in such testing and have facilities across all major cities nationwide to conduct these analyses. Typically, you should have 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair available. Hair assessments can be tailored for substances like drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific testing needs.

In recent years, drug testing procedures have increasingly incorporated hair follicle tests. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse specialists mandate hair tests over the conventional urine tests. Such tests are favored by organizations with strict no-drug policies, legal authorities, and individuals on probation. One notable advantage of hair follicle tests is their extended detection span for substance use, often reaching up to 90 days, collected under observation and challenging to manipulate. However, for detecting recent substance use in the past 5 days, urine tests remain the standard choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective method for identifying the consumption of drugs and alcohol. The strands of hair offer an extended timeline by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of a growing strand. When taken near the scalp, these strands can provide an indicative period of about three months for drug and alcohol usage. Collecting hair is straightforward, tough to tamper with, and easy to mail.

A hair segment of 1.5 inches, incorporating roughly 200 strands (similar in thickness to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, yields about 100mg, which is optimal for both screening and verification processes. For EtG, additional tests, or tests above 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advisable. It's recommended to use a jeweler's scale for weighing the hair. Should scalp hair not be available, equivalent body hair can be taken. By head hair, we mean hair from the scalp exclusively. Body hair encompasses other types (facial, axillary, and so on).

Process Overview

The primary steps in the laboratory handling of drug test outcomes include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial incorporation of a sample into a lab's system. This step ensures the sample's seal and proper dispatch, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fills in any missing data not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening involves an initial swift assessment for misuse of drugs. While screening is an economic approach for most samples to rule out use, legal admissibility requires confirmation of a positive screen. Samples flagged as presumptively positive during screening need subsequent confirmation.

In cases of presumptive positivity at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial batch for further Extraction. Drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening notably intricate.

Positive screening outcomes are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methodologies. Presumptively positive samples undergo washing before confirmation when necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair testing can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests, which offer a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is nearly impossible, ensuring more reliable findings.
  • Yields historical usage patterns: It identifies usage trends over time rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Zero detection of recent consumption: Drugs become perceivable in hair only after roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing typically incurs greater costs compared to other methods.
  • Result variations: Metabolic concentrations can be influenced by hair color and personal hair growth differences.

Note: Despite often being called "hair follicle tests," the examination focuses on the hair shaft, not the follicle below the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle tests to urine tests in Delaware, IA, the benefits become clear. Hair testing provides superior detection accuracy and reliability due to its ability to retain historical drug use information. Unlike urine tests, which offer short-term detection, hair follicles can capture drug metabolites over longer periods, providing a comprehensive view of an individual’s drug history. This extended detection advantage enhances workplace safety and compliance.

With hair follicle testing, employers appreciate the reduction in sample tampering opportunities, leading to more reliable results than urine tests typically can offer. As a result, businesses and organizations that implement hair testing can confidently uphold stringent drug-free policies, improving workplace reliability and reducing potential risks associated with substance abuse among employees.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle tests offer an extended detection window, making them highly effective in Delaware, IA. This testing method can track substance use for up to 90 days, offering a historical view of an individual's drug use. Employers and organizations benefit from this prolonged detection period as it provides comprehensive insights into an employee's substance history, ensuring informed decision-making when evaluating applicant suitability and maintaining workplace safety.

Choosing hair follicle testing over other methods grants employers a more thorough understanding of their workforce's history regarding substance use. This extended window allows for robust monitoring and better compliance with workplace drug policies. Employers can now make educated decisions based on a complete drug use profile, reflecting the commitment to maintaining a drug-free environment within their organization.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Delaware, IA, hair follicle testing significantly reduces the risk of sample tampering, yielding reliable and indisputable results. Unlike other testing methods susceptible to manipulation, hair follicle tests make it nearly impossible to alter outcomes, ensuring trustworthy results for employers and organizations. This test's resistant nature underscores its appeal to companies looking to uphold strict drug policies and maintain workplace integrity.

The inability to alter hair test samples allows organizations to rely confidently on the test results. By choosing hair follicle testing, employers can rest assured that the data accurately captures an individual's drug use history, reducing the possibility of false negatives or compromised samples. This assurance helps maintain high standards for personnel and keeps operations running smoothly.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
