Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Delhi, Iowa. For those in need of a hair-based drug or alcohol analysis, our specialty lies in hair testing, supported by testing centers across the nation. Typically, an inch and a half to two inches of hair from the head or body is sufficient. Various drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specific tests can be conducted using hair samples.

The trend of employing hair follicle drug tests has risen recently. This method is increasingly favored by employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse counselors over the traditional urine test. Businesses with stringent anti-drug policies, courts, and probation programs frequently use hair tests. These tests offer benefits such as prolonged detection spans of up to 90 days, supervised sample collection, and high resistance to tampering. However, for detecting recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair examination is increasingly recognized as a robust method for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. Hair captures a sustained record of substance usage by embedding biomarkers in the hair strand as it grows. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer detection for up to roughly three months for both alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to gather, hard to falsify, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of about 200 hairs (roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the prime amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or assessments over 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. When mentioning head hair, we exclusively mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key phases in laboratory processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, a sample is initially processed into the laboratory’s system. This step ensures the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial swift assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a budget-friendly method to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive screening requires further confirmation for court admission. Any samples testing presumptively positive in Screening need a secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is collected from the original specimen and prepped for Extraction. Here, drugs are removed from hair at significantly lower concentrations than alternative methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening stands as the most challenging method to conduct.

Confirmation of a positive Screening result is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are cleaned as necessary. The total laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug intake for up to 90 days, while urine tests present a limited detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating hair drug tests is extremely challenging, enhancing the reliability of outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides a trajectory of drug use over time instead of just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: It requires roughly 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal variations in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While typically termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis is performed on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle tests to traditional urine tests in Delhi, IA, the advantages become evident. Hair tests are less invasive and provide a longer detection window, giving a comprehensive view of substance use over the past three months. This makes them more reliable for employers aiming to maintain strict anti-drug policies.

Hair testing allows for accurate substance detection long after the drug has metabolized, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection period. Employers benefit from a more detailed understanding of an individual's drug use history, which is critical for maintaining a drug-free workplace environment.

The superior detection period of hair follicle tests is a notable advantage when comparing them to urine tests. The extended timeframe gives employers more confidence in the accuracy of the results, leading to better decision-making processes. This makes hair testing a more effective tool in the fight against workplace drug use.

Extended Detection Window

One of the significant benefits of hair follicle testing in Delhi, IA, is its extended detection period, which can reveal drug use up to 90 days prior. This long window provides employers with a detailed view of an individual's substance use history, which is crucial for making informed hiring and employment decisions.

The ability to detect drugs over an extended period is especially beneficial for maintaining workplace safety. Employers gain peace of mind knowing that they have a comprehensive insight into their employees' histories, reducing the risk of substance-related incidents.

An extended detection window allows for a thorough examination of past substance use, which is not feasible with shorter-window tests like urine analysis. This gives a more accurate reflection of an individual's lifestyle choices, making it an invaluable tool for employers in Delhi, IA.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The resistance to tampering is a notable advantage of hair follicle testing in Delhi, IA. Unlike other testing methods, hair samples are not easily altered or substituted, ensuring that the results remain accurate and reliable.

Hair follicle tests significantly reduce the chance of sample adulteration, providing results that are both trustworthy and indisputable. This reliability is crucial for employers committed to drug-free workplace policies.

In comparison to urine tests, which can be tampered with through various means, hair testing offers a robust solution. The integrity of the sample is maintained from collection to analysis, making it a preferred choice for accurate drug testing in Delhi, IA.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
