In Edgewood, Iowa, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings. If you're in need of either a hair or alcohol analysis, our centers Nationwide offer proficiency in hair assessments. Generally, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your scalp or body. Tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored options.

Hair follicle drug tests have become a popular choice in recent years. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse specialists often prefer their use instead of urine tests. Hair screenings suit zero-tolerance workplaces, legal requirements, and probationers. They extend a longer detection timeline, up to 90 days, under monitored conditions, making tampering difficult. Conversely, for recent drug use (within 5 days), urine tests remain most effective.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an influential method for uncovering drug and alcohol use. Hair strands capture biomarkers within the fibers, providing an extensive history of alcohol and other drug consumption. When hair samples are collected near the scalp, they offer a detection period of up to roughly 3 months for both alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of around 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, amounts to 100mg of hair—the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG add-ons and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a larger sample of 150mg is suggested. It's advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a similar amount of body hair can be utilized. When mentioning head hair, it exclusively refers to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning marks the initial phase of integrating a sample into a laboratory’s system. This step includes confirming that the sample is properly sealed and shipped, the allocation of a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any extra data entry that an electronic chain of custody system might not supply.

Screening is a preliminary check for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient technique to exclude drug use in most samples, any positive result from Screening requires confirmation to be legally acceptable. Samples with a presumptive positive from Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample yield a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extricated from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), thereby making hair drug screening the most intricate methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive result from screening is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with a presumptive positive are washed before confirmation, as necessary. The overall laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation falls under the review of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for a duration of up to 90 days, which is longer than the detection window of urine tests.
  • Challenging to manipulate: The difficulty in cheating a hair drug test enhances result accuracy.
  • Historical usage pattern: It offers insight into a pattern of drug use over a time span, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to spot recent use: It takes about 5-7 days after use for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result fluctuations: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the levels of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis involves the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
