Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Essex, Iowa. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise is in hair testing, with facilities available in cities nationwide capable of conducting these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body suffices for the test. Hair samples can be examined for various substances such as drugs, alcohol/ETG, along with other tailored hair testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more prevalent method for screening drug use. A variety of entities like employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists are opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine analyses. Used by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and those on probation, hair tests offer a key advantage through an extended detection timeline, typically revealing substance use for up to 90 days. These tests are done under observation, making tampering almost impossible, whereas urine tests maintain higher precision for drug use within the preceding five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a vital method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as a long-term archive of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When gathered close to the scalp, hair can show results for up to roughly a 3-month period for alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to collect, not easily tampered with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample of about 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the ideal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional items, and/or tests over 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. It's advisable to weigh the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't an option, a comparable quantity of body hair can be utilized. When mentioning head hair, we are talking exclusively about scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary four stages in the laboratory examination of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the initial processing of a sample within a lab’s system. This step includes ensuring the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any remaining data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment for abusive substances. Although Screening offers a cost-effective approach to exclude drug consumption in most cases, a positive screen must be confirmed for court admissibility. Any samples that test presumptively positive in Screening need a follow-up confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at much lesser concentrations than other techniques (ex. urine or oral fluid), hence why hair drug screening is the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is conducted through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all presumptive positive samples undergo necessary washing. The overall lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted in compliance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can detect substance use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection range.
  • Hard to falsify: It is extremely difficult to fake a hair drug test, rendering the results more reliable.
  • Delivers substance use history: It offers a timeline of drug use over a duration, rather than just current use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug testing alternatives.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While frequently mentioned as "hair follicle tests", the evaluation examines the hair strand and not the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
