Accredited Drug Testing provides all-inclusive hair follicle drug testing services in Everly, Iowa. Should you require a hair drug or alcohol assessment, we focus on hair testing across numerous cities Nationwide. Hair length should range from 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown or body for most tests. These analyses can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing needs.

Recently, drug test procedures have often included hair follicle testing over traditional methods. This approach is preferred by numerous employers, legal entities, and substance abuse experts who favor a hair test instead of typical urine analysis. Zero-tolerance employers, legal systems, and probation programs widely utilize hair follicle tests due to their extended drug detection up to a 90-day period. They ensure an observed collection process which is resistant to tampering. However, urine tests remain the most precise for drug use detected within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended historical record of alcohol and drug intake by capturing biomarkers within the hair strand's growing fibers. Collected near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol use within a detection window of up to three months. Hair samples are easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to ship.

A 1.5-inch sample of around 200 hair strands (roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. We suggest using a jeweler's scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is not available, the equivalent amount of body hair may be used. Head hair refers strictly to scalp hair, while body hair includes any other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four main steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage of processing a sample into the laboratory system. It involves verifying appropriate sample sealing and shipment, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening effectively rules out drug usage for most samples cost-efficiently, confirmed results are needed for legal admissibility. Any samples preliminarily positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If a sample appears positive during Screening, more hair is taken from the original specimen for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted at a far lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology.

The Confirmation stage for any screening-positive results uses GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are washed as needed before confirmation. The laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and complies with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, while urine tests offer a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to adulterate: Cheating a hair drug test is challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Shows usage patterns: Offers a timeline of drug use over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inadequate for recent use detection: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Typically more costly than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth rates can impact drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis is conducted on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
