In Farson, Iowa, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing extends nationwide, covering all cities with facilities that can conduct these tests. To qualify, your hair needs to be 1.5 to 2 inches long on the crown. Drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tests can be customized.

Over recent years, hair follicle testing has become a more common method for drug screening. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are increasingly opting for hair tests over routine urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation officers prefer hair tests due to their extended detection period of up to 90 days, revised under supervised conditions, and this method is difficult to circumvent. However, for drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective means to detect drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a comprehensive timeline of substance use by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer up to a 90-day detection period for substances. Hair sampling is straightforward, resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches from roughly 200 strands (akin to the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both analysis and confirmation. When testing for EtG or extended panels beyond 10, 150mg is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale is recommended for weighing the sample. If scalp hair can't be collected, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. 'Head hair' refers specifically to scalp hair, while 'body hair' encompasses other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The procedural steps in processing a laboratory drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the process where a sample is systematically entered into a lab's system. It involves confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any pending data entries not captured by an electronic custody system.

Screening is a preliminary assessment to identify drug abuse. It serves as a cost-efficient method to rule out drug presence in most samples; however, a positive result necessitates further validation for legal admissibility. Any presumed positive samples during Screening need subsequent confirmation.

If a sample tests as presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from the hair at lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine, oral fluids), making hair drug analysis particularly challenging.

Any positive screening outcomes are confirmed through methodologies like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Presumed positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests track substance use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • Tamper-proof: Hair tests have a high accuracy rate, making them hard to manipulate.
  • Data on usage history: Provides insights into an individual's substance use trends over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Not suitable for recent use detection: Detection in hair takes roughly 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair testing tends to be pricier compared to alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Characteristics like hair color and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite being often called "hair follicle tests", this test analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
