Renowned for its comprehensive services, Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug analyses in Fayette, Iowa. Whether you require a screening for drugs or alcohol, we excel in hair analysis with facilities in every city nationwide ready to conduct the test. Typically, samples require 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp or body hair. These tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific hair analysis needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent as a method for substance screening. It is favored by employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse authorities over traditional urine testing. Employers with strict drug policies, courts, and probation services prefer hair testing due to its extensive detection timeframe of up to 90 days and the challenge in tampering with the results. Nonetheless, for drug use detected in the last five days, urine tests remain the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a long-term record of alcohol and drug exposure by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair shaft. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeframe of up to roughly three months for detecting alcohol and drugs. The collection of hair is straightforward, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, comprising around 200 hair strands (approximately matching the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for evaluation and verification. For testing EtG, any additional options, and/or assays beyond 10 panels, it is advisable to use 150mg of the sample. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample weight. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. The term "head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair only. The term "body hair" encompasses all other types (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory drug testing procedure mainly consists of four steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

The Accessioning phase includes the initial incorporation of a sample into a lab’s database. This step involves checking that the sample is securely sealed and transported correctly, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any remaining data input not supported by an electronic chain of custody mechanism.

During Screening, a rapid preliminary check for any substance misuse is performed. Although Screening offers a cost-efficient method to exclude drug intake for most samples, a verified result is necessary for legal admissibility. Samples presumed positive in Screening demand a secondary validation.

When a sample is flagged as presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original sample for the Extraction stage. At this phase, substances are isolated from hair at considerably lower concentrations compared to other techniques (such as urine or oral fluids), highlighting the complexity of performing hair drug testing.

Confirmation of any positive results from Screening is executed using techniques such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo a cleansing before confirmation as needed. The entire testing procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is conducted in accordance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug evaluations can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests, which offer a shorter timeline.
  • Minimal chance of cheating: Hair drug evaluations are very challenging to manipulate, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Historical consumption data: These tests can indicate a pattern of drug usage over time, beyond recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Lack of recent use detection: It generally takes 5-7 days for drugs to become identifiable in hair samples.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug evaluations are typically pricier than other testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Factors such as individual hair color and growth differences may impact the drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests," these analyses target the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
