Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Floyd, Iowa. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, we are experts in hair testing, with centers available nationwide, including all cities. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. Hair tests can examine drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

The hair follicle drug test has grown in popularity in recent years as a testing method. Employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists often opt for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation individuals favor hair tests for their lengthy detection window, usually up to 90 days, collected under supervision, reducing the possibility of tampering. Nonetheless, urine tests remain the most precise for identifying use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is perceived as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair locks in a long-standing record of substance use by entrapping biomarkers within its fibers as it grows. When obtained from near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection window of nearly 3 months for substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, not easily tampered with, and simple to transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 strands (about the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is the ideal quantity for testing purposes. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a specimen of 150mg is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for specimen measurement is suggested. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a similar amount of body hair can be collected. When referencing head hair, it pertains exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four pivotal phases in processing a drug test in a lab setting include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning marks the initiation of a sample's journey through a laboratory system. This phase involves ensuring the sample was sealed and sent correctly, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any missing data not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary examination for abuse drugs. Although Screening is a budget-friendly approach to discount drug use in most samples, a positive result must be confirmed to be legally valid. Any cases that test presumptively positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

In instances where Screening indicates a presumptively positive result, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are withdrawn from the hair at much lower concentrations than in other testing methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug analysis is the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screen is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are washed before confirmation if necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation goes through scrutiny under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection range: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a shorter scope.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly tough, which results in more reliable findings.
  • Supplies historical insight: It can depict drug usage trends over time, not solely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent consumption: Substances become detectable in hair after roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expenditure: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to other testing techniques.
  • Divergences in results: Various factors such as hair pigmentation and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite often being termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair shaft and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
