Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Franklin, Iowa. If you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol test, we are specialists in hair testing with centers nationwide, prepared to conduct your test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. We can analyze hair for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other tailored hair testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent for drug screening. Many employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts now prefer it over urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are advantageous for employers with strict no-drug policies, the courts, and those on probation. Their main advantage is a longer detection window of up to 90 days, with a monitored collection process, making them hard to tamper with. However, for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective resource for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. When collected near the scalp, it can offer a detection window for alcohol and drugs of up to roughly 3 months. Hair is easy to collect, rather challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of around 200 hair strands (approximately matching the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the perfect specimen for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a specimen weighing 150mg is suggested. It’s advisable to weigh the sample on a jeweler’s scale. Should head hair be unavailable, a corresponding amount of body hair can be collected. Head hair refers exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial integration of a sample into the lab’s system, including verifying correct sealing and shipping, issuing a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes a preliminary swift examination for drugs of abuse. While Screening efficiently dismisses drug usage in most cases, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for court admissibility. Any sample presumptively positive in Screening mandates secondary confirmation.

On detecting a presumptively positive sample during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen to prepare for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are withdrawn from hair at a lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug testing the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples are washed beforehand, as necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests detect drug usage up to 90 days, while urine tests have a shorter timeline.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly tough, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It portrays a drug usage pattern over time, rather than merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drug presence in hair becomes detectable after roughly 5-7 days.
  • Cost factor: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher expenses compared to other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations.

Note: Commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Franklin, IA, hair follicle testing stands out against the traditional urine tests. Benefits show its superior detection ability and reliability.

  • Broader detection periods
  • High accuracy
  • Limited tampering risk
These aspects make hair analysis the more effective choice for employers and judicial systems keen on maintaining stringent drug-free standards.

Extended Detection Window

One compelling reason hair follicle testing is preferred in Franklin, IA over other methods is its extended detection window. It can identify drug use for up to 90 days, offering a thorough view of an individual's substance use history. This long history is vital for employers wishing to understand an applicant’s or employee’s long-term behavior patterns.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
