In Garden City, Iowa, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug analyses. For those in need of drug or alcohol evaluations through hair sampling, our expertise is among the best, with testing facilities available nationwide. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required. These assessments can be tailored to check for substances including drugs and alcohol/ETG.

In contemporary drug testing, hair follicle evaluations have gained preference. Many companies, legal entities, and substance abuse experts now favor hair over urine tests. This method typically appeals to employers with strict no-drug-use regulations, legal systems, and individuals under probation. Hair follicle testing excels due to its extended detection window of up to 90 days, with its collection process being both observed and challenging to manipulate. Nonetheless, urine tests remain superior for detecting recent use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become widely recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair records a prolonged history of alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers within its growing strands. When collected from the scalp area, hair offers a detection time frame of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, not easily tampered with, and conveniently shippable.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil thickness) nearest to the scalp equates to 100mg, which is the optimal sample amount for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels beyond 10, 150mg of hair is advisable. It's suggested to weigh the hair sample using a jeweler's scale. Without scalp hair, a corresponding volume of body hair can be utilized. By head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair pertains to other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary stages in processing a lab drug test result are: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the first processing of a sample into a lab’s system. This step includes checking that the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any further data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid check for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient approach to rule out drug use in most samples, to admit results in court, confirmation of positive screens is essential. Samples that appear presumptively positive in Screening need subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample appear positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most intricate methodology.

Any positive screening result undergoes Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The comprehensive laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a narrower detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly tough, ensuring more precise results.
  • Provides usage patterns: It offers an overview of drug use trends over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Can't detect recent usage: It generally takes around 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests have a higher cost than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Often termed as "hair follicle tests", the procedure evaluates the hair strand itself and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing detection methods, hair follicle testing in Garden City, IA, offers superior accuracy over traditional urine tests. Hair testing's key advantage lies in its unmatched detection capability, offering a more comprehensive assessment. This precision ensures a higher reliability rate, proving essential for various applications where certainty is crucial.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing offers an expanded detection window in Garden City, IA, capturing up to 90 days of drug use history. For employers, this comprehensive overview is invaluable, allowing them to accurately assess a candidate’s or employee’s long-term substance use. This extended period gives deeper insights beyond the limitations of other testing methods.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
