Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Gowrie, Iowa. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol evaluation, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analysis, with testing sites available nationwide, including all cities, where a hair assessment can be conducted. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. Our hair analyses can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized options.

Recent trends in drug evaluations have seen a rise in the use of hair follicle testing. A growing number of employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts now opt for this instead of the usual urine tests. Hair follicle testing is preferred by those enforcing strict no-drug-use policies, legal entities, and individuals on probation. A hair follicle test's main advantage is its extended detection capability, usually up to 90 days, under supervised collection, and it is nearly impervious to tampering. However, urine evaluations remain superior for detecting recent drug usage within a five-day timeframe.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair shaft. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to around three months for alcohol and drug use. Hair is easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of about 200 strands (roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferred quantity for testing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or panels greater than 10, 150mg of the sample is suggested. It is advisable to measure the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a corresponding amount of body hair is acceptable. Reference to head hair pertains specifically to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (such as facial and axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four essential steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning comprises the initial integration of a sample into the lab’s system. This process includes ensuring that the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry that is not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening incorporates a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical means to exclude drug use in the majority of samples, a positive outcome requires confirmation to be permissible in court. Samples that test positive in Screening must undergo additional verification.

If a sample tests positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. This involves isolating drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug analysis is considered the most intricate method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive results from Screening is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are cleansed as needed before confirmation. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and accredited by ISO / IEC 17025 regulations.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can register drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a limited detection period.
  • Hard to falsify: It is extremely challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing result reliability.
  • Offers historical insight: It can depict a timeline of drug usage over a duration, not just immediate usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting immediate use: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be more costly compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair color and individual differences in hair growth may influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although sometimes termed as "hair follicle tests", the assessment analyzes the hair shaft, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Gowrie, IA

In the comparison between hair follicle and urine tests, hair testing stands out as superior due to its longer detection window and reliability. Hair tests detect drugs up to 90 days back, a timeframe far beyond the typical urine test. This extended period provides a more comprehensive understanding of substance use.

Moreover, hair follicle tests are nearly tamper-proof, reducing adulteration risks significantly. While urine tests detect recent substance use, the accuracy and reliability of hair testing make it the preferred method for employers with stringent drug-free policies, ensuring a dependable evaluation of substance history.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
