What it is, How it works

When extracted near the scalp, hair delivers up to around a three-month detection span for alcohol and various drugs. A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg, which is the optimal sample for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or examinations beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. It is advised to measure the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't present, the same quantity of body hair is acceptable. When speaking of head hair, we solely mean scalp hair. Body hair refers to all other types (e.g., facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key elements in a laboratory's drug test result assessment include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the preliminary stage of introducing a sample into a lab's system. This step involves checking if the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and adding any additional data that isn’t available from an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening offers a quick initial assessment for drug abuse. Although Screening is a budget-friendly method to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be verified for court admission. Any samples testing presumptively positive during Screening need a follow-up validation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair from the initial sample is extracted and processed for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations much lower than other techniques (for example, urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening challenging.

Positive screening results confirmation is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples returning presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized in accordance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.
