Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug assessments in Grant, Iowa. Whether you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol evaluation, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analyses, with testing facilities across all cities Nationwide available to conduct such tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is needed. Hair evaluations can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Recently, the approach to drug testing has increasingly shifted to incorporating hair follicle analyses. Employers, legal authorities, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for hair evaluations over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are ideal for employers with strict policies against drug use, courts, and individuals on probation. They offer a notable detection period for drug use, usually spanning 90 days, collected under observation, and are nearly foolproof. However, for drug use detection within the past 5 days, urine testing remains the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of substances by embedding biomarkers in the strands of the growing hair. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeline of up to about 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, relatively resistant to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for screening and validation. For EtG, additional panels, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. We suggest measuring the sample with a jeweler's scale. If head hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be taken. When we mention head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, armpit, etc.).

Process Overview

The core stages of the lab analysis of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial processing of a sample into a lab's framework. This includes confirming the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplemental data entry not present in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid examination for drugs. While Screening is a cost-effective approach to rule out drug use in most samples, a positive result must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Positive screened samples require a second confirmation.

If a sample is preliminarily positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug testing is the most complex method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All preliminarily positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if required. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated following the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, versus urine tests with a shorter window.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical information: It provides a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: There's a delay of about 5-7 days before drugs become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Even though commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis occurs on the hair strand, not the follicle under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Grant, IA, hair follicle testing trumps traditional urine testing due to its superior accuracy in detection. Unlike urine tests, hair analyses offer an extended window for substance identification, making them an excellent choice for comprehensive evaluations.

Hair testing is less susceptible to tampering compared to urine testing. This superior reliability makes hair tests ideal for critical environments such as workplaces, where detection accuracy is imperative to safeguarding compliance and safety.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Grant, IA offers a significant advantage with its extended detection period, up to 90 days. This prolonged timeframe allows employers to gain a detailed understanding of an individual's substance history.

With this comprehensive perspective, potential risks can be better managed, promoting a safer workplace environment. The impressive detection scope uncovers patterns of substance use that urine tests, limited to a shorter snapshot, may miss.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Grant, IA, the integrity of hair follicle testing significantly reduces the likelihood of sample tampering. This reliable method strengthens confidence in the results by providing unquestionable evidence of substance presence.

Due to the intrinsic nature of hair samples, attempts to adulterate results are largely ineffective. This ensures that the outcome reflects a true picture of substance use, offering peace of mind to those relying on the results for decision-making.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
