Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Greeley, Iowa. If you require a hair drug or alcohol evaluation, our specialty lies in hair testing with facilities across all U.S. cities equipped to conduct these tests. Typically, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body, which can be analyzed for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom testing needs.

In recent times, drug testing has increasingly incorporated hair follicle drug tests. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals often mandate these over standard urine tests. Hair follicle tests support zero-tolerance employers, judicial systems, and individuals on probation due to their extended detection window of up to 90 days. They are observed during collection, making them difficult to falsify, whereas urine tests remain more accurate for drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drug exposure by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer around a three-month detection period for both alcohol and various drugs. It is straightforward to collect, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches and comprising about 200 strands close to the scalp yields 100mg, the optimal amount for testing and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding ten panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest measuring the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair refers to all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab procedure for processing a drug test result encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into the lab's system. This step involves confirming that the sample was sealed and transported correctly, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any added data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary, cost-effective check for drug abuse. While Screening is efficient for ruling out drug usage in most samples, any positive results must be confirmed to be legally admissible. Samples with presumptive positives in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample show presumptive positives during Screening, additional hair from the original sample is processed for Extraction. During this step, drugs are isolated from hair at a notably lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair analysis poses significant methodological challenges.

Any positive outcomes in Screening are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are cleansed as necessary before confirmation. The complete lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair analysis can uncover drug use up to 90 days prior, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to fraud: Manipulating hair test results is challenging, thus enhancing accuracy.
  • Historical insight: It reveals a drug use pattern over time rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Detection in hair takes approximately 5-7 days from the time of use.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are more costly compared to other methods.
  • Result variability: Characteristics like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite being called "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
