Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Guernsey, Iowa. If you're in need of a hair-based drug or alcohol test, our centers Nationwide, including every city, are equipped to administer these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is required. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized for specific needs.

Over recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become a favored method. Increasingly adopted by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse specialists, these tests are preferred over traditional urine tests. They are employed by organizations enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies and for individuals on probation. The key advantage lies in its extended drug detection capability—up to 90 days—collected under direct observation, making it highly cheat-resistant. However, urine tests remain the most precise option for detecting recent drug use within a 5-day timeframe.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a potent method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair archives a prolonged history of substance use by capturing biomarkers within its developing strands. When sampled near the scalp, hair can offer up to a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (approximate width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the perfect amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest weighing the hair using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not an option, the same volume of body hair may be used. Head hair refers specifically to scalp hair only, while body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Summary

The laboratory processing of drug test outcomes consists of four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the introduction of a sample into a lab’s workflow. This process verifies the sample’s proper sealing and shipment, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening performs a preliminary assessment for substances. Though it is a cost-saving measure to dismiss drug use for most samples, a positive screen must be validated to hold up in court. All samples presumed positive in Screening must undergo further confirmation.

When a sample is presumed positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, substances are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging procedure.

Positive screen results are verified using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples testing presumptively positive are cleaned before confirmation as necessary. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a more limited detection window.
  • Difficulty in deception: Cheating a hair drug test is notably challenging, ensuring more accurate results.
  • Reveals usage history: It can illustrate a trend of drug usage over time, not just recent events.

Drawbacks:

  • Incapable of detecting immediate use: Drugs typically become detectable in hair after 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing often incurs higher costs than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle tests offer multiple advantages over traditional urine tests in Guernsey, IA. They boast enhanced detection accuracy and reliability, giving them a significant edge. While urine tests are standard, hair testing provides a more comprehensive view. Employers and institutions benefit from the superior detection capability, often spanning up to 90 days, reducing the chances of false negatives.

Unlike urine tests, hair testing is less invasive and offers a longer detection window, making it ideal for zero-tolerance environments. The observed collection process ensures the sample's integrity, leading to more trustworthy outcomes. Organizations opting for hair testing reduce the risk of sample tampering, ensuring compliance with strict workplace policies.

Extended Detection Window

In Guernsey, IA, hair follicle testing allows for detection of drug use over an extended period. Unlike other methods, it can track substance consumption up to 90 days prior, providing a comprehensive history. This long detection window ensures that employers can assess an individual’s extended drug usage, aiding informed hiring and employment decisions.

The broad detection range of hair follicle tests covers substances ingested within the past three months, offering a detailed assessment of a person’s drug history. This expansive view supports employers in making well-informed decisions, ensuring workplace integrity. The long window captures occasional, moderate, and chronic usage patterns effectively.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
